"Palto Flats is thrilled to release an overview of the mid-80’s works of Roland Young, perhaps best known for his spiritual jazz record Isophonic Boogie Woogie. This release comprises the entirety of his 1984 four song 12" I-Land as well as most of his 1987 LP Hearsay Evidence, both originally released on Young’s own Flow-Chart Records.

Roland P. Young is a classically trained jazz clarinetist who performed at a young age with Alice Coltrane and was a principal member of the avant-garde jazz group Infinite Sound and NYC no-wave group, The Offs, whose first record featured a Basquiat cover. This release presents a different side to his story, featuring vocal contributions from his wife, Risa. On “Balla-Balla,” she sings repetitively over a spacey 808 rhythm and bass sequence in a dance-floor filler reminiscent of The Paradise Garage. “Don’t Ever Take Your Love Away” features a sound best described as melancholy synth Lovers Rock with an incessant reggae rhythm underpinning evocative synth lines. On other tracks, Roland sings in a higher pitched, soulful voice over rudimentary analog sequences. The result is a totally mesmerizing, essential lost piece of Outsider Synth-Boogie. Don’t miss this!"
