One of modern music's great mysteries remains quite how Robert Pollard - the latter-day laureate of low-rent indie rock with the look of a Geography teacher - manages to be quite as prolific as he does, yet stranger still is the sheer consistency of his output. Yet to say I Sell The Circus, his first under this new guise and ninth this decade alone (not counting six Guided By Voices albums) is 'just' another great Pollard record would be damn it with faint praise: replete with Who-esque hard-rocking chutzpah, wry lyrical inflections, indelible melody and school-of-hard-knocks attitude, I Sell The Circus is as life-affirming as anything this mystical elder statesman has created in living memory.
