Often found providing powerful backing vocals for The Fatback Band, female funk trio Wild Sugar released a string of singles in the early 80s on The Sound Of Brooklyn. This was their first. "Messin' Around" comes with such a distinctive, crisp funk groove (complete with juicy synth boogie squiggles) it's mad that this didn't have the Dickens sampled out of it. Unlike the B-side "Bring It Here"; a slower burning funk jam with its toes still dipped in the deep end of disco, it was recycled by the likes of NWA, Jazzy Jeff, Grandmaster Flash and Beasties Boys.
