RARE SET
Of the talent of Joao Carlos Martins, Alfred Cortot proclaimed: "With
this kind of tone, with the ability of his fingers, he could become very
important for the history of piano playing."
Alas, it was
not to be, as Martins while on a visit to Bulgaria was pummeled by thugs
so badly, he entirely lost the use of his right arm. That said, years
before, he gave us this gift:
Bach’s WELL-TEMPERED Complete.
It was recorded in the Grand Ballroom of the Manhattan Towers Hotel in
1964, in twelve four-hour sessions, one per week.
Only the
finest equipment was used, and in the Connoisseur Society tradition, all
processing was without a hint of limiting, EQ, compression, or
artifical reverb.
The end result stands beside Glenn Gould’s
as one of the finest ever put to records, here in a slipcase box that
has minor wear, hardly of concern.
A treasure of piano repertory, not to be missed.
