Impulse AS-9138 (1971 Impulse/ABC reissue)
Pharoah
Sanders-tenor saxophone, flute, vocal; Dave Burrell-piano; Henry Grimes-bass; Roger Blank-drums; Nat Bettis-percussion,
produced by Bob Thiele / Recorded by Rudy VanGelder 1966
Pharoah
Sanders followed the path John Coltrane blazed in his late period, when
Pharoah was playing in his band: spiritual and transcendent--with loose
compositions as vehicles for free improvisation--drawing from musical
traditions from around the world for inspiration. There are long liner notes inside the gatefold by Nat Hentoff, where he relates some of Sanders' history, including his early years in Oakland playing with alto saxophonist Sonny Simmons and the drummer, Smiley Winters (see my other listings for a 1972 recording of the woefully unknown Smiley Winters...) The recording quality of this LP is superb, typical
of Impulse!, this one recorded by Rudy Van Gelder.
The LP condition is VG+, it played through smoothly
with very little static and surface noise. The ink is worn around the
spindle hole, but the hole itself is solid. The cover is worn,
with a 4" edge split on the bottom edge near the opening, shelf wear on
the bottom edge and ring wear. After Impulse got sold to ABC they cut costs by eliminating the protective cellophane overlay on the cover: thus, much of the ink on the cover has worn away from shelf friction. This LP has the iconic Impulse! gatefold orange spine, and the title is well-aligned
and easily readable. The inner sleeve (with Impulse/abc/Dunhill catalog items from 1971) is included.
