When 22a released the debut album from four-piece Ruby Rushton back in 2015, few of those involved were particularly well known. Now, of course, it's a different story. Led by saxophone and flute-wielding Ed Cawthorne (AKA Tenderlonious) and featuring drums by Yussef Dayes (one half of Yussef Kamal), the band looks set for a major breakthrough. "Trudy's Songbook: Volume 1" is an effortlessly summery and organic affair that stylishly shuffles between tracks that meld elements of spiritual jazz, soul, hip-hop, salsa, Afro-jazz and freestyle improvisation. It's hugely entertaining, impeccably produced and brilliantly played. You can bet your bottom dollar that Gilles Peterson is a fan, and you should be, too.
