Tagged as 'juke', Surly's second release to date is much more grounded in jazz and hard bop. The Polish newcomer has impressed with this release so far, taking traditional visions of the genre onto new and exciting territories that have been explored only superficially over the last decade. What is most special about the tunes on Trip To Warsaw is how genuine they sound and feel. For most wannabe jazz musicians, the vibe can feel a little forced at time, but Surly's methods of instrumentation feel as natural around drum machines and synths as they would do around a 5-piece band with brass, piano, bass and wind instruments. This really is a trip in every sense of the word, and it might just well be the release of the month from us. Warmly recommended.
