Fossil Youth

For fans of Hotelier, Microwave and DryJacket, Bilmuri, Between You and Me, Life Lesson

File under syncopated guitar-driven college oriented alt-rock with a strong, serious vocals

Tri-color

Fossil Youth is still weaving a story in "Glimpse" that lifts off from the opening chords of a contagious sing along "Watercolor Daydream" to the closing ring out of "Linger In My Head." Singer and guitarist Scottie Noonan repeats over and over again: “You don’t need me at all.”

But you do. While so many bands sound like vinyl geeks who sold their older sibling's records from bands like The Feelies, Dumptruck, Blake Babies and Lemonheads to buy guitars and amplifiers (and shouldn't have), Fossil Youth captures a glimpse of that college radio heyday when Superchunk was shaping a new narrative of angst and dischord with their flock of "Slack Motherfuckers". While thousands of bands have widened that dirt path into a super highway, Fossil Youth is driving nearby but taking the blue highways—the color of older interstates on paper maps—just off the tollways and the miles and miles of triple-digit exit ramps. In other words, they follow a sound familiar with the likes of those before them that were good bands, but they haven't flooded the freeway with another album  recorded with mediocre millennial musicians. Fossil Youth are defined more by what they are not—another punk/indie/emo/whatever the fuck band.

"A Glimpse OF self Joy" is done well. Very much so. And if you like the sound of those second phase indie pioneers like Superchunk and Mercury Rev, then Fossil Youth could be a new fave thing.

And is that a Replacements reference when Noonan lyrically opens with the words "color me impressed" on the song "Monochrome"? Fossil Youth stands straight alongside a new stock of rock purveyors like the Hotelier, Microwave and DryJacket. These guys are certainly worth the modest $20 for any of the three variants.

This sell is for the orange disc.
