The Smithsonian Institution's massive best-selling ''Collection of Classic Jazz,'' first issued in 1973, became what NYTimes's jazz critic John S. Wilson called an ''instant classic.'' In 1987, a revised and updated version was described by another Times reviewer, John Rockwell, as a ''blockbuster summation'' of jazz, although Mr. Rockwell questioned whether the set was forward-looking enough. Cavils aside, the overview contained in this set, selected and annotated by Martin Williams, is unquestionably the most authoritative of its kind, with 95 selections ranging from a piano roll from 1916 of ''Maple Leaf Rag'' played by the composer, Scott Joplin, to the World Saxophone Quartet recorded in 1981.
Issued with 120-page booklet of the same title, "selected and annotated by Martin Williams, with a biographical index by Ira Gitler." (Revised edition 1987; first edition published 1973.) Booklet includes detailed notes and original session credits, plus performer bios, photographs, historical introduction, and bibliography.
