Visual grading

The vinyl is extremely 'clean' and still has a very strong glossy sheen.  Under a bright light I can only detect a small number of very hairlines and a couple of tiny 'specks' on each side and there are no scratches.  There is hardly any spindle wear so I suspect this record has not been played that much and the run out grooves and labels are also in superb condition.

Play grading

The slow build intro on 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' plays very clearly with only a couple of mega light ticks and thereafter the clarity is very impressive and there are no clicks or pops.  During this entire intro there is only the bare minimum of static but it is so quiet and non-intrysive.  As Gilmour enters the scene the playback is stunning and it continues in similar fashion with hardly any static and just one light click towards the end of the first part.  As Mason comes in the audio could not be any better!  It is so 'clean' and there is no 'background' of any kind.  There are three consecutive clicks in the next section but as the vocal begins the playback is very strong and the audio cannot be faulted.  The same applies to the sax solo section which is 'as new', stunning in fact!  There is just some static at the end of the fade out.

There is also some static on the 'Welcome To The Machine' intro but once the 'music' begins there is a lot to like!  There is hardly any 'background' and once the vocal begins followed by the instrumental section the clarity and definition of the audio could not be improved upon.  The final verse has only a minimal amount of inner groove distortion on the vocal but still plays extremely well and the final instrumental section has no interference whatsoever.  The 'party' scene provides a superb finish to the side with great clarity and you can clearly hear the intended 'pop' and 'cough' right at the end!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Have A Cigar' plays with stunning quality from the very first groove.  With only a handful of barely audible dust ticks this is as close to perfect that you will find.  This wonderful clarity continues into the vocal and Gilmour's end solo is faultless.  There is even barely any static on the radiophonic section at the end.  This is easily Mint- the audio is sublime.

The radiophonic intro on 'Wish You Were Here' also has hardly any static and only a couple of light ticks.  There is perhaps just a little more static once you hear the acoustic guitar but it is quiet and not intrusive.  The vocals are very 'clean' aside from a couple of light clicks during the first verse.  The other two verses are 'as new' they play with great precision and depth and the remainder of this plays beautifully with no interference.

The 'wind' intro on 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part 2)' has no ticks or clicks and only some light static.  The static is a little louder as the 'music' begins and there are a small number of very faint ticks but very soon it plays with great quality and no 'background'.  The audio during the mid instrumental is absolutely fantastic!  There is no distortion on the top end and the vocal then plays with supreme clarity.  The long instrumental end section brings this classic to a satisfying close with sublime clarity and depth and all I heard was one very faint tick.  So apart from a little static at the beginning and a minimal amount right at the end (very minimal!) this is a stunning Near Mint version without question.

In summary this first pressing plays to a very impressive standard and whilst it isn't perfect there is only minimal static, no crackle and only a very small number of clicks.  The majority does indeed play with stunning clarity and definition and the cover is also very clean with very little wear and the lyric inner is very close to being perfect.

The Cover

This iconic cover is in excellent condition with only a little shelf wear.  It is so difficult to find a 'decent' one these days and whilst this isn't perfect it is a very 'clean' version.  The edges and spine have no rubbing and three of the corners have hardly any wear.  Only the one lower right has some light rubbing and a minor tear on on the bottom edge.  The opening edge is in great shape with only minimal 'feathering'.  The front cover has no marking as such, just a little fading/spotting around the edges as is common - some light ringwear.  The back cover is similar with some light ringwear fading.  Better than so many you see today!

The Lyric Inner & Postcard

The lyric inner with the three cut corners has no marking or staining which is a rarity.  The edges are in great shape with only one tiny rub on the bottom edge (not a split!) and a small amount of wear on the right edge of the 'veil' side.  There is no creasing to be seen.

The original postcard with the serrated edges in in superb condition with only a couple of tiny rubs.

The Labels

They are almost 'as new' with no marking or writing and barely any spindle wear.  They could not be any cleaner!
