Disco/Nu Disco/Re-Edits
Here's something to set the hearts of all electronic experimentalists a-flutter: a fresh album of experiments on the ground-breaking, ultra-rare EMS Synthi 100 - a hybrid analogue/digital synthesizer first unveiled in 1971 - by Soulwax brothers (and Deewee founders) David and Stephen Dewaele. There's an accompanying 48 page booklet that tells the story of the synth (and in particular the unit the Dewaele brothers used, which is owned by Ghent University), but the headline attraction is undoubtedly the music: a set of undulating electronic movements that slowly tease out interlocked modular melodies, pulsating motifs and even discernible basslines. Sitting somewhere between Terry Riley's synthesizer-based works, Tangerine Dream and the Radiophonic Workshop, it's a gloriously vibrant collection that brilliantly showcases a machine that remains ahead of its time.
