One listen to this debut album from Matt Berninger should be enough to tell anyone who didn't know that this is the frontman from The National - indie rock superstars who have long been sitting at the top of the visibility scale. There's plenty here that lives in the same stylistic landscapes Berninger's big band made their collective name in, and that's definitely not a bad thing.

After all, who can complain at the generous lashings of musicality that bring Americana to life on 'Distant Axis'? Or scoff because 'One More Second' seems to capture the very essence of heartbroken songwriting, its meld of organs and jazz rhythms neither groundbreaking nor played out. This is classic singer songwriter maestro rock 'n' roll, and anyone who says differently should get ready for some questions from us.
