Rating 9/10 Daoud 11 August 2020

I’m going to be honest, this record isn’t for everyone.

Duma are hard. Theirs is some unholy mixture of grindcore and noise and breakbeats and all sorts of sounds that you might hear from your local DIY venue. Their label, Nyege Nyege Tapes, has released some of the most intense dance music I’ve ever heard in the last few years. And while you’re probably unlikely to hear something by Duma played by a DJ (which is a shame), there’s no denying that the label have stayed true to that intensity.

In the hands of Martin Khanja and Sam Karugu, blast beats become techno rhythms too heavy for techno. Techno tracks tend to sustain and release, Duma don’t want it to go anywhere. They root you where you are, a rabbit in the headlights of this infernal machine. Their screams are intense and foreboding, capable of ripping huge holes in their industrial backdrops.

Their willingness to play with their genres, and to reach beyond them, brings to mind the heavy explorations of the likes of the Body and Full of Hell (and indeed their collaborative albums). The hyper-specificity of the heavy genres means bands can end up feeling a bit samey. So I’m thankful to the likes of Duma, who wield these sounds in ways that are exciting and unfamiliar.
