Life on the road is now a surreal memory for both the bands that lived it, and the fans that believed the myth of its glitz and glamour. When Mazzy Star recorded this collection, they had been touring their jaw-dropping and era-defining folk-rock masterpiece So Tonight That I Might See for well over a year, a juggernaut odyssey that seemed to get longer as word of mouth spread and the record garnered ever-greater legions of fans.

It must have been an exhausting experience, but certainly one you might understand singer-songwriter Hope Sandoval lamenting now. As this live reissue arrives all bands are on hiatus due to the pandemic, but more tragically her comrade in sound, David Roback, died early 2020. Ghost Highway is a time capsule, then, full of deeply intoxicating music, dark guitars and pagan-ish rhythms. The pair at their very best
