After five long years, Richie Hawtin has finally offered up a brand-new single. So, which version of the Canadian producer are we getting: the early '90s industrial-tinged techno pioneer, or the noughties minimalist? Interestingly, it appears to be neither, but rather an all-new upgrade that utilizes bits of both of Hawtin's prominent dancefloor identities. A-side 'Time Wraps' is an 18-minute epic in which positive-sounding melodic hooks and synthesizer refrains dance atop a bold, stomping techno beat. In contrast, 'Time Stands Still' is creepy and intense, with Hawtin making increasingly wild changes to dark sci-fi chords and a sharp, minor-key loops, while a thumping beat plays below. It, too, nudges up towards the 20-minute mark, though you'll be so lost in the mind-altering groove that you may noy notice.
