Experimental/Electronic
While Jean-Michael Basquiat's fame came through his distinctive and now celebrated paintings, he was also a member of one of the most interesting "industrial sound" bands ever to emerge from the downtown NYC scene, Gray (the other members included fellow founder Michael Holman and Vincent Gallo). The band only ever recorded one album, 1981's Shades Of, but it's a good 'un: a deliciously hazy, hard-to-pigeonhole sound soup that combines ambient textures, music concrete style tape loops, experimental noise and delay-laden instrumentation with ghostly vocals and found-sound percussion. This timely (and highly limited) reissue stretches the original set across two slabs of slate-grey wax, while also adding a third record of contemporary remixes from the likes of King Britt, the Gaslamp Killer and Todd Rundgren.
