In a relatively short space of time, young Greek beat-maker Moderator has become one of the rising stars of the instrumental hip-hop scene. Listening to Midnight Madness, his latest album, it's easy to see why. Inspired by the twin delights of cult movie soundtracks (particularly of the 1960s and '70s) and fat drum-breaks, the album's 14 cut-and-paste cuts variously doff a cap to jazz, lounge, spy-funk, psychedelia, swinging sixties beat music and the extensive soundtrack works of Roy Budd and Ennio Morricone. It makes for hugely easy and entertaining listening, with the producer's ability to get the best from his largely obscure samples standing out.
