To describe ISIS as anything other than heavy metal would be pushing it, and, frankly, a decision born from the hangover left behind by the late-1980s genre overkill. A time when big hair and big stadiums meant big fun for big crowds but little by way of creative prowess. More fool the naysayers, though, as the sound of dark and fast and driving and atmospheric has been delivering the goods since the early days of Black Sabbath and never stopped, you just need to look properly.

ISIS are a case in point. There's so much happening in their work and none of it can be reduced to a branded t-shirt. At times they come at you with a swirling, immersive metal to get lost in. At other moments, things border on Ride-esque shoegaze. Whichever you encounter first on the excellent Panoptican, you're guaranteed to be back for more soon.
