The Beatles : Revolver 2/1 1st Mono Press 'Withdrawn Mix' 1966
This very collectable and relatively rare LP is the most stunning example of a 'withdrawn mix' first press that I have listened to and as detailed below it is actually the most impressive Revolver I have ever played! The clarity, depth and warmth of the audio is STUNNING and with only a couple of light ticks on S2 the playback could hardly be any stronger. The vinyl has been so well preserved, visually it is very impressive, and that is reflected in the sonic quality that is on offer here. It is without doubt a FINAL UPGRADE time-warp classic - you just could not wish to find a better version. As detailed below there are so many highlights (i.e. every track!) but the classic 'Tomorrow Never Knows' is a genuine stand out track. pressing. How many of these first pressings exist today where this track is often ruined by a fair amount of inner groove distortion? This is common with final tracks (the same with 'She Said She Said' on S1) and yet the clarity and power on this version is AMAZING! There is NO distortion at all, never heard anything like it!
The iconic E.J. Day cover is in superb condition with no obvious wear and has hardly been handled down the years, it is so clean. The original paper inner is also in excellent order.
As this is a genuine first press it has the 2/1 matrix and Dr. Robert on both the S2 label and the back cover. This 'withdrawn mix' version of the album of course features what is known as the 'Remix 11' of 'Tomorrow Never Knows'.

The audio on S1 is Mint(-) (T5 Near Mint)
The audio on S2 is Mint(-)
The cover is Near Mint-
The labels are Near Mint
The original inner sleeve is ExYou will not be surprised to hear that the vinyl is in lovely condition and still has a very impressive glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. There are some faint hairlines but there is nothing that stands out as obvious and you can only seen them under a strong unforgiving light. Under a more dull light the vinyl looks pristine! There is no groove wear and no dulling of the surface area, this record has been so well preserved down the years. The run out grooves are very clean and you can easily read the matrix info. The labels are in great condition with no marking or writing and there is not very much spindle wear on S1 and even less on S2. The KT tax code can clearly be seen on the S2 label.
Play grading
The lead in grooves on S1 have just one light dust tick so you are fully expecting 'Taxman' to play with great clarity and it certainly delivers! The 'countdown' has no 'background' and the brief instrumental intro and opening vocal are just as clean. It continues to play with phenomenal audio with no interference of any kind, not even a dust tick! Harrison's mid solo is 'as new' with no distortion and this is a mono record being played through a stereo set up! The remainder is of the same 'high end' standard and there is no 'background' on the fade out either showing just how impressive the clarity is. I have no hesitation in grading this as Mint it is an incredible start to the album.
With complete silence in the dead wax the vocal intro on the classic 'Eleanor Rigby' could not play any better. The first verse is stunning with no background to be heard and all you hear literally is the music! It continues in the same precise way where each note is just so clean and precise. This truly is audio of the highest calibre and I cannot remember when I heard a version as STUNNING as this and on a rare 'withdrawn' mix also! From start to finish this is 'as new' no exaggeration. Another Mint track.
'I'm Only Sleeping' plays to the same 'high end' standard and already I am running out of superlatives! The sonic quality has not diminished in any way - the clarity and definition is like you are back in '66 listening to this for the very first time. The vocal are 'pristine' and the mid instrumental has no 'background' either. Thereafter I detected only a couple of barely audible dust ticks but I am sure that can be forgiven!! To the very end it plays with outstanding clarity and depth and the psychedelic exit is as good as new also. Mint
The clarity of sound on the tabla intro on 'Love You To' is just unbelievable! With only a handful of mega light dust ticks this is as good as it gets. Lennon's vocal throughout plays with sublime clarity - there is a lot 'going on' musically with this track and yet you can hear each note so clearly. There is no 'muddiness' to the sound, no loss in audio quality, and Mint is again richly deserved. I have to say that the tabla sound is absolutely stunning!
'Here, There And Everywhere' plays beautifully for a relatively quiet track with barely any intrusion on the audio. There are maybe a few more dust ticks but by their very nature they are so quiet and obviously do not intrude on the quality of the listen. As we all know all vinyls have them even ones pressed yesterday let alone ones that are 56 years old! There are two ticks near the end but they are hardly intrusive. I will grade as Near Mint and again the playback is so impressive.
The classic 'Yellow Submarine' plays with superb audio throughout. In a sense I am surprised as by now I would be expecting some inner groove distortion but no it plays as clearly as the preceding tracks. No ticks, clicks or pops, no static this is Mint from start to finish including the fade out.
The final track on the side 'She Said She Said' is unequivocally the finest example I have ever heard! The clarity and power of the audio is second to none and again there is no discernible distortion. This is a record that has only been lightly played down the years and surely only on 'high end' equipment. There are no negatives although I will grade as Mint- just to play it safe! WHAT A SIDE!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------
S2 begins with a superb rendition of 'Good Day Sunshine' which plays with great quality from the intro right through every section. It's the depth of the music and just as important the clarity that really stands out. Just a hint of mega quiet static in the middle section but obviously not intrusive. Mint- is a fair reflection of the audio. If you win this just listen to the fade out you will understand exactly what I mean.
The intro on 'And Your Bird Can Sing' is flawless and the opening vocal can also be described 'as new'. It plays with great power and depth and again there is no distortion. Mint
'For No One' plays with crystal clear audio from start to finish with no sign of any interference, a few dust ticks no more. Perhaps a minor touch of barely audible static once or twice? This 'withdrawn' mix continues to impress I am pleased to say. Let's say Mint-
This standard is maintained with 'Dr. Robert' which plays with wonderful power, depth and clarity and, you guessed it, no interference. No need to elaborate this is another Mint- track.
The quiet build up intro on 'I Want To Tell You' is nigh on perfect with only a half second of mega quiet static. The first vocal is faultless and it continues to play with sublime clarity and depth. As per S1 there is no inner groove distortion and again there is no 'muddiness' to the sound, no loss in sonic quality at all. Mint-
A static click in the dead wax and then the brass intro on 'Got To Get You Into My Life' plays to perfection. The opening vocal has no interference and it continues to play with powerful audio and...great clarity. Now this is a track that regularly plays with some distortion but again no sign here! The playback is so strong and deep and I just cannot fault the sonic quality. I will say Mint- but I'm not so sure the minus is required.
The classic 'Tomorrow Never Knows' ends the album with STUNNING quality and remarkably there is still no inner groove distortion! This has to be the most 'complete' version I have ever listened to - it is such a busy track and yet you can hear all the psychedelia in all its glory! Every note is so sharp and precise and a special mention for the vocals - stunning in every way with no intrusion. You have to turn this up to max to fully appreciate the sonic quality and like I repeat there is NO inner groove distortion. This is an amazing version I cannot rate it highly enough and even the piano outro is so clean with not even a solitary dust tick. I have to play it again just to confirm what I was listening to and needless to say I was just as impressed! If the rumours are true that John didn't like this 'Remix 11' then I'm not sure why! This is a fantastic MINT version to end this unique album.
In summary this very collectable first pressing plays to a standard that I have certainly never 'experienced' before and as stated earlier it is actually the finest 'Revolver' I have heard. What a bonus that it is the 'Withdrawn' mix! The clarity and depth of the audio is on a level that you just never find today. I say never - I'm sure there are some out there but they are so rarely found on the market today put it that way. This classic album easily qualifies as a FINAL UPGRADE such is the sonic quality on offer here. There are so many highlights, too numerous to mention really, but 'Tomorrow Never Knows' is the obvious one. Never have I heard it play with such sublime precision - not even on a slightly later 2/2 pressing and certainly not on a modern reissue! Mono records add a greater depth and resonance it is often said and that is very much in evidence when you find a vinyl as 'clean' as this. I only detected two light ticks across the entire album and there is no inner groove distortion. I grade honestly as my feedback testifies and it is not in my interests to over-grade any record. This is why I listen to every album in full so as to provide a 'complete' grade and this is without doubt the finest example of this iconic album that I have ever had the pleasure in listening to. I am positive the winning bidder will not be disappointed either - a STUNNING version of this genuine first pressing.
The Cover & Inner Sleeve
The laminated E.J. Day cover is in lovely condition with no obvious shelf wear and again is one of the 'cleanest' I have ever seen. It is maintained its original shape and structure and has clearly not been handled very much over the years. The edges are in perfect condition with no rubbing/marking and the thin pinched spine is so close to perfect with only a small number of very faint 'spots' mainly near the top that you do not even notice at first glance, I certainly didn't! Remarkably all the corners are in fantastic shape with no real wear, a couple of mega tiny rubs if I'm being super critical and the opening edge is also so clean with no obvious handling wear. The front cover remains beautifully clean - it unmarked with only a couple of very faint laminate creases that you only see when you hold it at a certain angle and another couple of minor creases next to the spine. The back cover, so often badly worn because it isn't laminated, is in fantastic condition with no marking/writing and for once the flipbacks have hardly any of the staining that you so often see on the edges. The flipbacks themselves are super clean with just no marking, just one faint crease on the right edge. Everything stands out here as so impressive! The picture of The Beatles and the tracklisting/credits above truly is in superb condition with no marking or creasing whatsoever. I honestly believe Near Mint- is a fair assessment of this stunning cover.
The plain white die-cut inner has no side splits or tears, hardly any age related fading and only light creasing. As per the first pressings it has Patents Applied For and Made In Great Britain printed on one side.
