You Can Dance is the 1st remix album by American singer Madonna. It contains remixes of tracks from her 1st 3 albums - Madonna ('83), Like a Virgin ('84) & True Blue ('86) - & new track, Spotlight. In the '80s, remixing was still a new concept & technology. Madonna became interested in it, noting she disliked when others remixed her music & wanted to do it herself. She turned to friend & producer John "Jellybean" Benitez to help her remix the songs & Patrick Leonard to produce. The mixes exhibited a # of techniques. Instrumental passages were lengthened to increase the time for dancing, which undermined the tighter structure of the original pop song. Vocal phrases were repeated & with multiple echoes. At certain points, almost no music is heard except the drums & at other times, the drums are removed. The album cover denoted her continuous fascination with Hispanic culture. A commercial success, it also received acclaim from critics, who called it an essential album to be played at parties. It reached the top 20 of the USA Billboard 200 & the top 10 of the charts in France, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway & the UK.
