Deep Purple : Shades Of Deep Purple 1/1 1st Press
This very collectable first pressing plays with very impressive audio for the vast majority and S1 in particular is stunning.  The classic opening instrumental 'And The Address' is practically 'as new' it is that good.  S2 has a little more interference but there are no loud clicks or pops and a full grading is given below.  The majority still plays to an excellent standard but it's not quite as good as S1.  This is kind of reflected in the visual quality, S1 is incredibly clean and S2 just has a few more hairline marks.
The laminated cover is in very good condition with only a little wear, there is nothing that really stands out.  A couple of marks on the back but nothing major.  The original inner remains in excellent shape.
This first stereo press has  'Sold In U.K. Subject...' on a yellow/black Parlophone label.  It also has a 1/1 matrix of course.  As can be seen this is also one of the first off the 'press' as it has the all important first G1 stamper on the S1 label.  It has P1 on the S2 label.
PCS 7055 // YEX 689 - 1 / YEX 690 - 1 // G 1 / P 1
The audio on S1 ranges between Ex+ and Near Mint (but T1 Mint- / T3 'thunderstorm' intro Ex)
The audio on S2 ranges between Ex+ and Near Mint- (but T1 first half VG+ / T2 VG on final quiet section)
The cover is VG+
The inner sleeve is Ex+
The labels are Near Mint-
Visual grading
The vinyl still has a very impressive glossy sheen and no dulling or mottling of the surface.  S1 is in superb condition with only a small number of very faint hairlines and whilst S2 has a few more hairlines, with a couple that are a little more obvious, there are no scratches.  There is one section with some faint 'scuff' hairlines but they have no affect on the audio.  The majority of the side is actually very clean.  The yellow/black Parlophone labels are unmarked and do not have too much spindle wear.
Play grading
The quiet intro on 'And The Address' plays with great clarity with only a small number of dust ticks and as the volume builds the playback is superb and has no distortion.  It continues to play with great power and the depth of the audio is particularly impressive.  There are no ticks, clicks or pops and the clarity cannot be faulted.  You can see where Purple were heading with this classic instrumental and it really does play with sensational audio.  It has lost none of its original sonic quality and I am confident in grading it as Mint- it is that strong.  The fade does not even have any background that is a measure of the clarity on offer here.
The classic 'Hush' has only a handful of very light ticks on the intro and you can hear the wolf very clearly!  As the track gets going the playback is so strong.  From then on it plays so well and again I must just mention the depth/definition of the audio - stunning!  This is obviously a record that has not been overplayed i.e. there is no groove wear and this is why the audio is just so strong and deep.  They knew how to produce vinyl in the 60s!  There are a small number of light ticks about 3/4 of the way through but they are so quiet you could easily miss them.  There is a light click near the end but again it is buried to a large extent in the powerful music.  Overall Near Mint- is deserved.
The 'thunderstorm' at the start of 'One More Rainy Day' has only a small number of light ticks and as the music begins the audio has no background at all.  Evans' opening vocal is just as impressive and it continues to play with sublime clarity to the very end.  Perhaps just a hint of distortion on the final section but it so minimal and totally non-intrusive, it may not even deserve a mention it is so minor.  Let's say Ex for the 'weather' intro and Near Mint for the remainder.
The intro on 'Prelude : Happiness' has only a couple of crackles right at the start and Lord's introduction brings just 2/3 very quiet ticks.  As this section progresses there is no interference and it plays with real power and only very minimal inner groove distortion.  This first part is Ex+ and the segue into 'I'm So Glad' is close to perfect with only two light ticks on the intro.  The opening vocal is so strong and it continues to play with great power and precision.  There is a lot to admire here!  There is no interference and no obvious distortion here at all.  The final quiet section plays so clearly with just two light ticks and the high octane finish is flawless.  This grades between Ex+ and Near Mint in my opinion.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------   The intro on 'Mandrake Root' is very strong with only a small number of ticks/light clicks.  From then on it plays very well with no loud clicks or pops but there are some ticks here and there which is a little more noticeable in the first quiet section albeit brief.  The instrumental section then plays with stunning quality for the vast majority with barely any intrusion.  The first half of this track is VG+ but is very much Near Mint for the second.  VG+ does not been poor by the way!  There is not too much interference and it is by no means loud.
'Help' has only minimal light static at the start and then plays with superb clarity for the remainder of the intro.  The opening vocal also plays incredibly well with only a couple of light ticks.  This is a quiet section and the playback is very impressive and any static is kept to an absolute minimum.  As the volume increases there is no decrease in quality - the instrumental section is faultless and the closing quiet passage has three light ticks at the start and some light ticks and a few that are a little louder on the final half minute or so.  The majority is easily Ex+ if not better and then VG on that final section.
The intro on 'Love Help Me' is so close to perfect with barely any static and the first vocal plays with imperious quality and it continues in the same way.  There is no interference here and the audio is fantastic throughout!  The playback is so powerful and there is great depth here with no distortion.  It is Near Mint without doubt.
The classic intro on 'Hey Joe' plays with stunning clarity and depth with no intrusion whatsoever.  That 'high end' standard is prevalent across the entire intro - the audio is phenomenal!  The opening vocal is equally as strong, I cannot put into words just how superb the audio is here!  There are 4/5 light ticks at the start of the next instrumental section but that is the only background across the entire track.  The final vocal has no interference and to the end it plays so well with hardly any inner groove distortion.  The band 'exit' after the music has finished has only very minimal background, 3/4 crackles that is all.  This is a superb finish to the classic debut album and ranging between Ex+ and Near Mint is an honest assessment of the audio.
In summary this relatively rare and very collectable first press plays to an excellent standard and the majority is superb!  This is especially true for S1 which has barely any interference, the clarity is hugely impressive.  Plus it's the power and depth of the music that also stands out.  S2 does have a little more interference but it is not 'loud' and never lasts long, limited to a couple of tracks really.  I believe I have graded this classic in a fair way.  I haven't sold one in a long time and whilst not perfect it would certainly add to any collection and as stated the vinyl itself is very clean overall, S1 especially.
The Cover & Inner Sleeve
The laminated G & L cover is in very good condition with only a little wear.  The edges are perfect and the spine is also in great shape with only a couple of crease 'lines' and very minimal wear on the corners.  The top right corner is very clean and bottom right just has minimal creasing.  The opening edge has only a little handling wear.  The front cover is in excellent condition with no marking just some laminate creases next to the spine which is commonly seen.  The non-laminated back cover is very clean overall but does have a small area of 'scuffing/marking' just below the 'LE' of Purple and a couple of scuffs on the bottom flipback and a very small one on the top flipback, more of a small white 'line' really.  There are also a few small creases next to the spine again.  The flipbacks are still firmly attached to the cover which is good news.  A very creditable example overall.
The original EMI inner sleeve is in excellent condition with no side splits or tears and only minimal creasing.
