Led Zeppelin III A5/B5 1st Press w/Peter Grant credit
This genuine first press on the red/plum label plays to a fantastic standard with only a little interference on one fade out on S2.  Aside from that you cannot fault the audio such is the clarity and depth on offer here and even with that brief interference this is still one of the most impressive first pressings I have ever listened to.  There is very little spindle wear so based on this and the sonic quality this is quite clearly a vinyl that has not been on a turntable many times.
The iconic E.J. Day cover has to be one of the finest I have ever seen with very little shelf wear and it goes without saying that it still has a fully functioning wheel.  The original inner is also in excellent order.
As this is a first pressing it has the Peter Grant credit on the labels and of course an A5/B5 matrix.  The 2401002 catalogue number on the labels has no hyphen either.
2401002 // A - 5   1 2 5 // Do what thou wilt
2401002 // B - 5   1 1 7 // So mote it be
The audio on S1 is Mint(-)
The audio on S2 is Mint(-) (T1 fade out G)
The gatefold is Ex+
The 'plastic bags' inner is Ex
The labels are Near Mint
Visual description
The vinyl is in excellent condition and still has a very strong glossy sheen.  There is just one tiny scratch on S2 resulting in the interference as detailed below but aside from that it is visually very impressive.  It is only under a bright light that you can see some faint hairlines plus a band of sweepy hairlines on S1 but again they are faint, purely superficial, and have no effect on the superb audio.  The red/plum labels are in superb order with very little spindle wear and have retained their original deep colour incredibly well.
Play grading
The lead in grooves on S1 are very clean with barely any 'background' so you are hoping that 'Immigrant Song' will play with great clarity and it does not disappoint.  From the first note to the last the power and depth of the audio and there is no intrusion on the audio at all not even on the fade out.  It could not play any better and provides a dynamic Mint start to the album.
The 'spoken intro' on 'Friends' just has one minor static tick and then the acoustic section is 'as new' with no interference.  Plant's opening vocal is faultless and it continues to play with sublime quality for the remainder.  It has none of that 'tinny' distorted type sound that regularly affects this track and Mint- is an honest assessment of the audio.
The moog intro on 'Celebration Day' for once plays with stunning clarity and this quality is kept up as Page and then Plant join in.  As Bonham comes in the playback is phenomenal!  A powerful track and yet there is no distortion on the top end and this standard is kept up as it progresses.  Plant's vocal is very much on the higher register here and yet it has lost none of its original sonic quality I am pleased to say.  No distortion anywhere!  The instrumental/vocal end section has no 'background' and neither does the fade out.  Such a strong Mint version.
The gentle intro on 'Since I've Been Loving You' plays beautifully with only a couple of barely audible dust ticks.  In essence it could not really play any better!  You are concentrating on Page's work so it's easy to forget Bonham's contribution but needless to say every beat is so sharp and precise with no interference.  Plant's vocals throughout are just as impressive and Page's mid solo is STUNNING and I cannot overstate how strong and clear the playback is.  The quiet section that follows is again so clean with only a couple of dust ticks (that hardly deserve a mention) and the final 'high octane' vocal has barely any of the distortion that you so often find.  In fact is there any?  I'm not sure there is and this classic easily deserves a Mint- grade.  Once again the fade out plays perfectly with no 'background' - that's a measure of the clarity on offer here.  It is one of the finest versions I have ever heard.
'Out On The Tiles' plays with exceptional clarity and power with only the bare minimum of inner groove distortion.  As any Led Zepp collector will know this final track is always affected in this way and it is always a matter of how much.  I am delighted to say there is barely any here and it has to be one 'cleanest' versions that you will find.  It can certainly be turned up to 'loud' without having to turn it down immediately!  The 'heavier' section towards the end where Jones' bass is so prevalent is STUNNING!  But then the entire track is superb!  The sonic quality is so impressive here and the fade out has not even a single dust tick.  In my opinion this is a Mint- end to the side.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The acoustic intro on 'Gallows Pole' plays to perfection and again every note is so crisp and clear - if you win this LP listen intently you know understand exactly what I mean!  The opening vocal is equally as good and as the tempo increases there is no let up in quality.  Of course when Bonham joins the party the playback is even better!  There is such depth to this track and it plays with great quality almost to the end.  I say almost because there are 6/7 raspy clicks on the fade out caused by the very small scratch as mentioned above.  Obviously this is frustrating but at least the main 'bulk' of the track is not affected.  I will grade the vast majority as Mint and the fade out as G I think that is fair.
The 'first' acoustic intro on 'Tangerine' has no 'background' and the 7 second 'silent' passage has only a couple of light static ticks.  The next acoustic section is nigh on perfect with only a couple of dust ticks and Plant's opening vocal is flawless.  The chorus is 'as new' and it continues in the same way with sublime audio.  For a largely acoustic number now over 52 years old to play with such precision is a rarity.  Each note is so clean and this is another Mint- track.
'That's The Way' is an easy one to grade.  It plays with outstanding clarity and definition with just one very light tick on the 'Yesterday I saw you kissing tiny flowers...' line in the middle section.  A superb Mint- version and perhaps even the minus is a little harsh.
'Bron-Y-Aur Stomp' plays with stunning precision with zero intrusion.  As good as the day it was first pressed this is Mint from the first note to the last.  Wow what a version!
'Hat's Off To (Roy) Harper' ends this near perfect album with near perfect audio.  About one minute in I did hear a small number of very deep background sounds but they are so quiet and you could easily miss them.  From then on it plays with impeccable quality and no interference.  I am sure many would grade as Mint but I will say Mint- just to be a little cautious.
In summary this first pressing plays to a standard you so rarely find today.  S1 is indeed STUNNING and S2 is not far behind with only that one fade out having some interference.  The clarity, depth and power of the audio is so impressive and this is of course an album with a number of quiet sections.  When you find a red/plum pressing as clean as this you instantly know why they are so collectable - the sonic quality they offer cannot be beaten, the overall depth and resonance is streets ahead of any later pressing/reissue.  In conjunction with a great cover this is a superb 'package'.
The Gatefold & Inner Sleeve
The laminated E.J. Day cover is in lovely condition with only very minimal shelf wear and as stated the 'wheel' still works perfectly.  As per the first/early pressings the top and bottom edge of the front cover is 'open' to allow free movement of the wheel - the top edge has very little rubbing and the bottom one just a little more.  The wide spine is in fantastic shape with no wear not even on the corners and remains 100% legible.  There is hardly any wear on the right hand corners and the opening edge has only the lightest of handling wear also.  The front cover is so clean with no marking or laminate damage and the back cover is just as good.  It has barely any of the yellowing/fading around the edges and for once there are no horizontal laminate crease lines.  Actually just spotted just one small laminate crease near the bottom edge but it is faint. The inside of the gatefold is in immaculate condition and is still very 'white' with no marking and no inner spine damage.  A fine example overall and rarely found in this condition today.
The original poly-lined 'Plastic Bags...' inner (date coded 0470) is in excellent condition with no side splits and just one very small tear on the central 'window'.  It has only light creasing and not very much age related fading around the edges.
