As is usually the case with Ennio Morricone soundtracks, we always end up more intrigued by the films he's scored by virtue of him being the scorer. In rare cases, in fact, do we believe we would have seen the film otherwise if it weren't for Morricone's reputation. 'Magdalena', for example, is an obscure Yugoslavian film depicting a tumultuous love affair between a devout priest and a free-spirited young woman. Morricone's soundtrack is moody, drum-brushed and suspenseful, nailing the feeling of facing the dire consequences of a grave act; falling in love with the wrong person, in the wrong place, at the wrong time.
