Hawkwind : X In Search Of Space A-1U / B-1U 1st Press + Log Book 1971

This first pressing plays to a very high standard with very little intrusion on the audio.  Overall the sonic quality is stunning and the only real interference is for a brief three seconds after the 'Master Of The Universe' opening section on S2.  The clarity, depth and power of the audio is very impressive and whilst I have graded the final track 'Children Of The Sun' as Ex+ the vast majority is still better than that.

The iconic Gimmix cover is in great condition with only minimal wear and the original Log Book just has a piece missing on the back cover but is otherwise in excellent order.  So often missing it's good that it's included!  The inner sleeve is in superb condition also.

As this is a first press is has the A1U/B1U matrix and the writing and publishing credits on the labels flow into each other.  Side A also ends in a locked groove so you have to manually lift the cartridge.

UAG 29202 A-1U / B-1U // RG 2 / GL 1

The audio on S1 is Mint(-) (T1 opening section Near Mint)

The audio on S2 is Near Mint- (T1 Mint- but G for 3 seconds / T4 Ex+)

The Gimmix cover is a very strong Ex

The Log Book is VG+

The labels are Near Mint-

The inner sleeve is Near Mint-

Visual description

The vinyl is in excellent condition and still has a very strong glossy sheen with no marks or scratches.  There are some very faint 'specks' but you often see that on vinyls of this age and they have no affect on the audio.  Under a strong light I can see a few faint hairlines but there are no scuffs and no dulling of the surface.  The UAR labels are very clean and just have some spindle wear.

Play grading

The very quiet intro on 'You Shouldn't Do That' plays with stunning clarity - during the first minute I heard only a couple of light static ticks and there is no background static.  As the volume builds the playback is so strong and again I detected only 2/3 light static ticks.  It continues to play with exceptional power and depth through every section and with no distortion on the top end.  There are no clicks or pops and like I say no static either.  As the volume decreases towards the end there is literally no 'background' not even a dust tick and as it builds again this standard is maintained to the very end.  At over 16 minutes I will grade the opening section as Near Mint and then Mint- for the remainder.

'You Know You're Only Dreaming' has only a small number of dust ticks on the intro and the opening vocal is nigh on perfect with just one barely audible tick.  From then on it plays with impeccable quality with no intrusion on the audio and the clarity and depth of sound cannot be faulted.  No clicks, pops or static again and I believe Mint- is fully deserved.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The entire intro on 'Master Of The Universe' plays with stunning precision as there is no 'background' of any kind.  What a start!  At the end of this opening section there are a couple of clicks and a tick but from then on the audio is superb!  The sonic quality can only be described 'as new' - the power and especially the depth of the audio is so impressive.  The final vocal is of the same calibre so overall I will grade this as Mint- but G for that brief three seconds.

The acoustic intro on 'We Took The Wrong Step Years Ago' has just one light tick but otherwise plays with perfect clarity.  It then plays with flawless audio through every vocal and instrumental passage I cannot praise it highly enough.  The next acoustic section towards the end has no 'background' and the final vocal is equally as strong.  The closing instrumental has 3/4 light static ticks right at the end.  I will say Near Mint- but this is another case of the majority being better than that!

'Adjust Me' has only a small number of barely audible dust ticks on the intro and just a hint of mega light non-intrusive static for a couple of seconds and then plays so clearly with no obvious intrusion.  One static tick that is all but no clicks or pops and only minor touch of the lightest static imaginable in a couple of places.  Near Mint-

The intro on 'Children Of The Sun' plays very clearly with only minimal static and the opening vocal is perfect.  It continues to play with great precision and with no inner groove distortion.  There is just a minor hint of mega light static for a few seconds near the end and a little crackle on the fade out so Ex+ I would say is fair.  A very impressive end though.

In summary this first pressing plays with wonderful clarity for the vast majority and only very minimal interference.  In fact the only obvious interference are the 2/3 seconds on 'Master Of The Universe' right at the end of opening section.  Aside from that the audio is very 'clean' with minimal 'background' only and the clarity and depth of the audio is extremely impressive.

The Gimmix Cover, Log Book & Inner Sleeve

The E.J. Day cover is easily one of the finest examples you will find today.  It is still fully intact and has only minimal rubbing on the edges and corners and the 'main' spine is in excellent order and remains 100% legible.  There is minor creasing on the bottom corner of the fold-out section but it certainly does not stand out.  The front 'cover' is very clean with no marking and barely any fading around the edges and the back cover is just as impressive.  Once opened to show the blue/white interior it looks superb!

The original 24 page Log Book is in very good condition with very little creasing and no marking.  Printed on paper the only negative is that is has a piece missing from the back cover.  A shame because otherwise it would be at least Ex+

The plain white inner is in great shape with no side splits, tears or marking and only very minimal creasing.
