Nazareth : Nazareth A-2U / B-2U 1st Press

This first pressing on the Pegasus label plays with superb audio for the vast majority.  S1 plays with great audio and only a little interference which is detailed below but there is nothing that really stands out.  S2 however is absolutely STUNNING in so many ways!  With barely any intrusion the clarity and depth of the audio is so impressive and if you want the most 'complete' version of 'King Is Dead' then this is the album to own!  It plays beautifully with no intrusion whatsoever.

The textured cover has been so well preserved and is surely one of the finest examples you will find today.  The original inner is also in excellent condition.  There is no large poster enclosed here.

This first pressing has the A2U/B2U matrix and has PORKY and PECKO etched on the run out grooves which of course relates to famous mastering engineer George Peckham.  The cover is also textured.

PEG 10 // A - 2U (PORKY etched) L1 / B - 2U (PECKO etched) P 1

The audio on S1 is Ex+ (T1 Near Mint / T5 Near Mint-)

The audio S2 is Mint(-) (T1 Near Mint / T3 brief mid section Ex+)

The textured cover is Ex+

The labels are Mint-

The original inner sleeve is Ex+

Visual description

The vinyl is in lovely condition and still has an immaculate glossy sheen with just one tiny scratch at the end of track one on S1.  There are no other marks and under a strong light I can only see a few very faint hairlines which have no impact on the audio.  It is a fine looking specimen!  The Pegasus labels are practically 'as new' with only one very faint short spindle trace on S1.

Play grading

The run in on S1 has no 'background' and then 'Witchdoctor Woman' plays with great clarity and power.  The only intrusion is one very light click just after Charlton's solo and some crackle on the fade out.  Aside from that it plays perfectly and the depth of the audio - wow!  The audio is so strong and deep through every section and already you can tell this vinyl has hardly been played.  Overall I think Ex+ is fair but the vast majority is better than that!

'Dear John' has only a couple of very light ticks on the intro and then McCafferty's opening vocal is 'as new' and it continues to play to the same high end standard.  Every note is so clean and precise and that is very much in evidence with Wingfield's piano.  A couple of static ticks right at the end of the fade out but this is a stunning version that has lost none of its original sonic quality.  Near Mint

'Empty Arms, Empty Heart' then plays with great depth and power and the only 'background' are 5/6 very light ticks just after the second verse during the instrumental section.  The rest of the track plays with outstanding clarity although again there are 3/4 static clicks at the end of the fade out.  Ex+

The very quiet intro on 'I Had A Dream' plays perfectly and Agnew's opening vocal is close to that with only a couple of barely audible ticks.  There are a small number of light ticks during the mid instrumental but it still plays very clearly.  The final vocal plays with great clarity, almost perfect in fact with only 3/4 very light ticks.  A very impressive number that has to grade as Ex+ at the very least.

The quiet intro on 'Red Light Lady' plays with wonderful clarity with just a couple of minor ticks and then as the volume increases the playback is stunning.  It continues to play with phenomenal power and depth and the quiet mid section is very impressive with only a little static at the beginning - the audio is very clear.  The 'classical' end section plays with superb clarity and power and no interference.  A stunning end to this classic track and the fade out plays perfectly.  Near Mint- is an honest assessment of the audio.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S2 begins with a fantastic version of 'Fat Man' that plays with great clarity throughout with hardly any intrusion.  There are only 3/4 light ticks during the mid instrumental.  The audio plays with remarkable depth and Near Mint is easily deserved.

'Country Girl' has just one barely audible tick on the intro and then plays with sensational audio from then on.  In essence it plays perfectly with no intrusion, a couple of dust ticks no more.  I am confident in grading this as Mint- as the sonic quality from start to finish is STUNNING!  Not sure the minus should be there really!

The long percussive / bass intro on 'Morning Dew' is amazing!  The audio is so clean and I only detected one mega light dust tick prior to the vocal coming in.  A Mint start for sure.  McCafferty's opening vocal is not far off this standard with only a handful of very light and non-intrusive ticks.  The next instrumental and the beginning of the next vocal has a small number of light ticks also but they are not clicks!  From then on it plays with genuine precision and with no other 'background', the second half is indeed spectacular!  Being such a bass heavy track the depth and resonance of the audio throughout is superb and that is further exemplified because the vinyl is so clean.  In summary the vast majority plays with Mint audio and that brief mid section grades as Ex+

The strings intro on 'King Is Dead' plays beautifully and 'as new' is a correct description.  The quiet opening vocal is just as 'clean' and the first chorus has no 'background' either.  So far this is stunning!  It continues in the same precise way and I honestly cannot believe the clarity of sound here.  Every vocal and 'classical' section play with impeccable sonic quality which is so impressive for a final track that is so quiet for the majority.  There is obviously no inner groove distortion and right to the final note / fade out it plays with STUNNING quality.  The definitive Mint version version and wow what a version!

In summary this first pressing plays to a very high standard with only minimal interference on S1 and barely any on S2.  What really stands out here is the sheer depth of the audio - there is no 'muddiness' to the sound and it clearly hasn't been played very much, as stated above there is no obvious spindle wear.  Yes there is a little interference on S1 (little being the operative word!) but there are certainly no loud clicks or pops.  The most intrusive 'interference' is on a fade out!  Overall the clarity on both sides is very impressive but yes S2 does take it to another level.  The final track the classic 'King Is Dead' is a case in point, it just could not play any better!

The Cover & Inner Sleeve

The textured cover is in great condition with only very minimal shelf wear and there is certainly nothing that stands out.  Only the bottom edge has minor rubbing and the thin spine is very clean with only a couple of minor rubs and a little wear on the bottom corner.  The right hand corners are in great shape with no obvious wear and the opening edge is as close to perfect as could be with no handling wear.  The front cover is so clean and the white section in particular is stunning with only a faint ringwear near the top edge.  The back cover is just as impressive and again just has faint ringwear / fading near the top.  A superb example overall.

The original plain white die-cut inner is very clean with very little age related fading around the edges, no side splits and only minimal creasing.  In one corner the catalogue number Peg 10 has been written.
