The Beatles : Yellow Submarine 1/1 1st Stereo Press 1969 (Red Lines)
This genuine first press plays to a very high standard with minimal intrusion. S1 just has some of the usual inner groove distortion towards the end and S2 is so close to perfect with only a small number of light ticks and four light dull clicks during one 'track'. Overall though the clarity of sound is very impressive on both sides and a full grading is given below.
The vinyl has clearly been well looked after and has no marks or scratches and the first press cover whilst not perfect is one of the cleanest ones you will find today in my opinion. The original black inner is also in shape with only light wear.
As this is a genuine first press it has the 1/1 matrix and the 'Sold in U.K. subject...' text on the labels. 'An E.M.I. Recording' is also shown on two lines on the labels. This first press cover has the two red lines on the back and the flipbacks have no information written on them, they are totally blank. As can be seen this is quite an early first pressing as it has a single O stamper on S1 and GA on S2.
PCS 7070 // YEX 715 - 1 / YEX 716 - 1 // O 1 / GA 1
The audio on S1 is Near Mint (T1 & T3 Mint- / T5 Ex / T6 Ex-)
The audio on S2 is Mint(-) (T3 &T4 Ex+)
The cover is Ex-
The labels are Near Mint-
The original black inner is Ex-The vinyl is in lovely condition and still has a very impressive glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. Under a bright light I can only see a few faint hairlines but none that are obvious. It is a fine looking vinyl! The run out grooves are very clean and the Apple labels are unmarked with not very much spindle wear on S2 and hardly any on S1.
Play grading
The classic 'Yellow Submarine' plays with great clarity with no sign of any interference. Not ticks, clicks, pops or static it really could not play any better and even the fade out plays perfectly. A Mint start to the album.
'Only A Northern Song' plays to a very similar standard although if I'm being super harsh the clarity isn't perhaps on quite the same level as the first track. Don't get me wrong it still plays very clearly with no actual intrusion on the audio and if the clarity is 10/10 on the previous track it's 9/10 here! Near Mint is about right.
'All Together Now' is nigh on perfect with no interference. The clarity and depth is very impressive and Mint- is deserved.
'Hey Bulldog' plays with superb audio from start to finish and again there is no interference. The vocals are very clean and the mid instrumental plays with genuine power and depth. There is maybe a slightly 'tinny' sound to the audio but this is so minor and perhaps more due to how it was recorded / produced. Let's say Near Mint
'It's All Too Much' has no actual interference but the sonic quality is not as strong here in my opinion. I have sold a number of these first pressings down the years and this seems to be a common problem with this track and perhaps should not be downgraded as a result. The record has certainly not been overplayed so again I'm sure it's down to how it was recorded etc. It was let's face it a bit of a throwaway album! Ex is a fair assessment of the audio.
The previously recorded 'All You Need Is Love' ends the side with some inner groove distortion as is common with this album but it still plays clearly with no clicks or pops. I think Ex- is again fair.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The first of George Martin's compositions 'Pepperland' plays beautifully with no intrusion. There are a handful of extremely quiet dust ticks but obviously have no impact on the audio. Mint-
'Sea Of Time' has 3/4 mega quiet dust ticks on the intro and then plays with stunning clarity for the remainder. The overall 'sound' is very different to S1 but that is hardly surprising when it in a sense it is a completely different recording. This deserves to be graded as Mint- again.
The majority of 'Sea Of Holes' is of the same standard but in the mid section there are a few light ticks, definitely not clicks, and are hardly intrusive. I will grade it as Ex+ overall.
'Sea Of Monsters' plays with super clear audio with only a couple of very light ticks near the start and four dull sounding light clicks just before the Air On The G String section. There are no other issues and again I will grade as Ex+ but yes the majority is better than that :-)
Both 'March Of The Meanies' and 'Pepperland Laid Waste' play with stunning quality with no interference whatsoever. Both deserve to be graded as Mint- such is the clarity on offer here.
The final orchestration 'Yellow Submarine In Pepperland' plays with outstanding quality for a final track and there is no obvious distortion at all. I imagine this side hasn't been played very much. A superb Mint- to end the album.
In summary this first pressing plays to a very high standard with very little in the way of interference. Admittedly the clarity of sound towards the end of S1 is not as strong as the rest of the album but as stated this is a common issue with this recording I find. The rest of the album plays with stunning clarity and very possibly has the 'cleanest' S2 I have ever heard. A very impressive genuine first press overall.
The Cover & Inner Sleeve
The G & L cover is in excellent condition with not very much shelf wear. The top edge is perfect and the bottom edge has just one small scuff / rub. The thin pinched spine is so clean with just minor wear on the corners and only the bottom right corner has some rubbing that is more obvious. The opening edge has very little handling wear. The laminated front cover is in excellent order overall with just one minor corner crease top left and some light creasing and a couple of very tiny tears in one small area by the opening edge. This back cover (with the red lines) is so often found in poor condition but it is pretty good shape here. It has only very light marking here and there but as you can tell from the photos there is nothing that stands out. The flipbacks remain perfectly attached to the cover and have barely any of the staining on the edges that you so often see. A quite impressive example overall.
The original black die-cut inner is in excellent shape with just one very small side split that you can hardly see and one small tear on the top edge. There is hardly any creasing.
