Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso had dropped a number of singles before they appeared in 1967 for a debut album on Philips. We say 'they' but in fact this record is actually Caetano Veloso's work on the whole as he composed, arranged and performed most of the tunes and Gal acted as the solo vocalist. There is a tropical feel to these tunes which are at heart art pieces that defy many pop conventions. Strings are carefully used to add lushness and great vocal control also define the sounds which made for their most gentle and tender work ever as they went on to be major figures in the psychedelia-influenced Tropicalia movement.
