The Rolling Stones : Their Satanic Majesties Request T2-1K / P1 Very Rare Mono hybrid
This pressing is a genuine rarity and in addition to that it also remains in fantastic condition! I messaged Jan Richardsson, the expert on all things Stones and the curator of the stonesondecca site, and even he had never seen this matrix combination before. He has now updated the site to take this into account. The word 'rare' is often over-used but it certainly applies in this case - one for the Stones' completists you could say. If you would like to see his email to me please feel free to get in touch.
Of course the T2-1K matrix means that S1 is not a 'true' mono mix - it is a stereo mix that has been 'folded' down to one channel to create a mono sound. The P1 matrix is a true mono and yes the bell tolls three times on 'The Lantern' intro.
This incredibly rare pressing has hardly been played and the audio is STUNNING across both sides with no clicks or pops and only minimal light static at the start of the final track on S1. In essence there is no actual interference! The clarity, depth and power of the audio is superb and the vinyl is in beautiful condition also.
The iconic lenticular cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear and the red psychedelic inner has also been very well preserved. A stunning 'package' overall.
TXL 103 // ARL-8126-T2-1K // ARL-8127-P1 KC 1 (no stamper / mother on S1)
The audio on S1 is Mint(-) (T5 intro Near Mint-)
The audio on S2 is Mint(-)
The lenticular gatefold is a very strong Ex
The labels are Near Mint
The 'psychedelic' red inner is ExThe vinyl is in superb condition and still has a very strong glossy sheen with no scratches. Only under a bright light can you see a few faint 'specks' and some minor mottling - S2 also has a small faded area on the first few grooves but none of this has any affect on the audio. Purely superficial. A handful of very small faint hairlines that is all and it is easily one of the cleanest Satanics I have seen as you generally find it heavily played with a number of hairlines / scratches. Not this one! The blue grooved labels are close to perfect - S1 has just one small faint spindle trace and S2 just one slightly longer one around the spindle hole. The run out grooves are super clean and you can clearly see the matrix info and KT tax stamp.
Play grading
The piano intro on 'Sing This All Together' is so close to perfect with just one very quiet tick at the start and the opening vocal section has no background at all. The psychedelic mid instrumental is 'as new' with not even a single dust tick and the final vocal plays to the same high end standard. A Mint- start to this classic album.
The classic intro from Richards on 'Citadel' plays to perfection and Jagger's opening vocal is equally as strong. It continues to play with stunning power and clarity through every section and each note is crystal clear which is quite rare for this 'busy' track. The music itself is STUNNING here and is the real star of the show - to my ears Jagger's vocal seems a little low in the mix but maybe that was intended. There are no ticks, clicks, pops or static and Mint- is again deserved although I am not sure the minus is necessary!
The intro on 'In Another Land' is 'as new' and the same can be said for Wyman's opening vocal. From then on it plays like it has never been on a turntable before! Every verse and chorus play with sensational quality and no interference and Hopkins harpsichord plays beautifully throughout. Even Wyman's snore at the end is as 'clean' as I have ever heard! This is Mint from start to finish.
'2000 Man' once again shows just how infrequently this vinyl has been played. It plays with incredible clarity through every vocal and instrumental section and the choruses in particular play with superb power and depth. If you win this have a good listen you will know what I mean! Mint- because of one static tick on the fade out!
The quiet 'spoken' intro on 'Sing This All Together (See What Happens)' has only a minimal amount of light static at the start and from then on plays with stunning precision. Running at very nearly 8 minutes it has lost none of its original sonic quality and the playback is 'as new' without a doubt. There is literally no intrusion on the audio and the end vocal is a case in point - no background at all. The few seconds of silence at the end are exactly that, silent, and then the final 'instrumental' piece has no interference either. Let's say a Near Mint- intro but from then on Mint the audio is stunning!
----------------------------------------------------------
The Carnival Barker intro on 'She's A Rainbow' has no background and the piano opening is just as clean. Jagger's first vocal is faultless and this high end standard is kept up as it progresses. In fact I cannot overstate just how strong and clear the audio is - it is just STUNNING! The piano / strings section plays beautifully with not even a single dust tick - this is Mint from the first note to the last! What a version!
The iconic intro on 'The Lantern', with the bell tolling three times of course, has no interference and the following acoustic section is as impressive. The opening vocal again plays to perfection and this clarity of sound is prevalent to the very end I am pleased to say. There are a number of quiet sections and yet they all play so clearly with no intrusion. I only noticed a handful of super quiet ticks in one acoustic passage, very very quiet! Mint-
'Gomper' plays with outstanding quality from the very first note. The entire 5 minutes play so well and again there are no clicks, pops or static. A couple of mega quiet ticks maybe but you really cannot fault the audio here. There is no distortion and the psychedelic section is well...faultless. Another Mint- track.
The intro on '2000 Light Years From Home' is SUPERB! The playback is so clear and as I often say there is not even a single dust tick! The opening vocal section plays with real depth and it continues to play with a sonic quality that is second to none. The quiet mid section plays with 100% accuracy and the remainder of this classic has no background either. This is the definitive version and Mint is well deserved. I don't think I've heard it play with such warmth and depth before. The quiet end section is fantastic, so clean with no dust ticks etc! Wow what a version!
'On With The Show' ends the album with exceptional quality and of course... no interference. The clarity of sound is again very much on show despite being the final track where the sonic quality is often affected. The psychedelic instrumental is a prime example of that - 'busy' and yet the clarity is superb. The remainder plays to the same high end standard. I will grade as Mint- just to err on the side of caution :-)
In summary this rare pressing plays to a high end standard with a clarity, depth and resonance that is second to none. This has clearly only been played a handful of times and even then maybe not all the tracks! There is basically no interference, just a minimal amount of non-intrusive static on the final track of S1. No clicks or pops and no annoying background static to contend with. The sonic quality is stunning! It's rare to find this classic in such condition and together with a superb lenticular cover it delivers on every level. It has the wow factor.
The Lenticular Gatefold & Red Inner Sleeve
This famous 'mono' cover is in lovely condition with only minimal wear. In fact the only real wear is a small split on the bottom edge of the back cover which isn't obvious anyway. The top edges are superb with barely any wear and the bottom edges are very clean with only a couple of minor rubs. The spine is strong, 100% legible and unmarked and all corners are practically 'as new' with no obvious rubbing etc. The opening edge has no handling wear either. The front cover is in fantastic condition with no laminate lift but as is common it does bow a little although the iconic 3D image is still firmly attached. The back cover is more or less perfect with only one tiny corner crease bottom left and the inside of the gatefold is immaculate and for once the inner spine is in perfect order. A fine example and it would be difficult to find a better one.
The red psychedelic inner is in great condition with no marking and has just one very small split on the bottom edge.
