LARRY & THE BLUE NOTES

One of the many, many energetic but undistinguished American garage bands of the mid-'60s, Larry & the Blue Notes cut a few obscure singles whose distribution was limited to their Forth Worth, TX, base. Although much of their repertoire consisted of covers and ballads, their greatest enthusiasm was for British R&B/rock, and they wrote some derivative originals in the Yardbirds/Stones vein. Working with Major Bill Smith (who had a hand in huge early-'60s hits by Bruce Channel and Paul & Paula), they made a few singles that were eventually sought by completist garage collectors a couple of decades later. Their "Night of the Sadist" and "The Phantom" are a couple of the better-known garage novelties. At the peak of the '60s garage revival, Big Beat pieced together an album's worth of material by this not-too-deserving group by gathering a few singles (some released under different names) and unreleased tracks. The only one really worth noting is the Yardbirds-inspired guitar-harmonica raveup "In and Out," presented in both its official version and an unreleased take of same...(AllMusic)

The first and one of the best garage bands to come out of Fort Worth in the sixties. Slater and Roquemore put the band together to play at a Halloween gig. Line-up 'A' dates from 1963, but line-up 'B' was the one that played on their 45s. Hammond had earlier played for Jack And The Rippers, a sixties Texan outfit that did not make it on to vinyl. Their first song was Night Of The Sadist, a spine-chilling recital of an attack by the Lake Worth Goat Monster whose legend the band fuelled. They took it to local entrepreneur Major Bill Smith, who feeling he had a hit on his hands, removed the word 'sadist' from the title and renamed the record Night Of The Phantom. It was soon leased to 20th Century Fox and gave the band a local hit. The group developed a penchant for recording under pseudonyms and later that year recorded an inferior rehash of the song for a 45 released as by The Mark Five. For a latter 45 they used the pseudonym The Bad, and also toured as a bogus Sir Douglas Quintet. In 1968 the band split when Slater and Roquemore went on to form a new outfit, Soul Purpose and Randy Cates joined Gypsy. Roquemore also had a solo 45, Mrs Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter/Just Stay (Guyden 2124). The 'A' side was a U.S. No. 1 back in 1965 tor Herman's Hermits...(Fuzz Acid & Dreams)
