Pink Floyd : Meddle A-1U / B-1U 1st Press 1971
This first pressing plays with stunning quality with barely any interference. There are just four consecutive clicks on S2 so is very brief but wow the rest of the audio is incredible! S1 is spectacular and the intro on the classic 'Echoes' is the finest I have ever heard. The clarity, depth and warmth of the audio on both sides is so impressive and if not for the one tiny and barely visible scratch on S2 this would be as near to perfect as is possible.
The fully textured cover is in lovely condition and is easily one of the finest I have seen. It has very little wear and for once the spine has only minimal wear and remains 100% legible. The original EMI inner is also in excellent order with no side splits etc.
A genuine first press is denoted by the 1U / 1U matrix and by the gatefold being fully textured.
SHVL 795 // A - 1U / B - 1U // RO 2 / RD 1
The audio on S1 is Mint(-) (T1 Near Mint)
The audio on S2 ranges between Near Mint and Mint- but is G for 4 seconds
The gatefold is Ex+
The labels are Near Mint-
The original Harvest inner is Ex
Visual description
The vinyl is in excellent condition with a very impressive glossy sheen and just that one very tiny scratch as described. Unless you played the record you would not know it was there it is that small. Aside from that it is very clean with only a few very faint hairlines that clearly have no impact on the audio. The yellow / green Harvest labels are in great condition with only some spindle wear but not an excessive amount.
Play grading The 'wind' intro on 'One Of These Days' so often plays with a lot of background static but this is one of the cleanest I have heard. It has only a couple of minor static ticks and the clarity of sound is stunning! The iconic bass intro from Waters is just as impressive and already I cannot believe what I am listening to! As Mason joins in closely followed by Gilmour the audio is so deep and strong and the next stand alone bass / Dr Who (!) section plays with exceptional quality and... no interference. Mason's next 'solo' is faultless and this high end standard is kept up during the 'vocal' and the next more powerful section, the sonic quality is phenomenal. It plays with great power and depth - there is a lot 'going on' musically here and yet you miss nothing, the playback is as clean and fresh as it was back in '71. The final 'wind' section has only a couple of minor static ticks and overall Near Mint is deserved, the majority is even better than that! It has to be one of the strongest versions I have ever listened to.
'A Pillow Of Winds' plays beautifully through every vocal and instrumental section with no background of any kind. The clarity is 'as new' I can pay it no higher compliment and Mint- is an easy grade to give. The minus is only there because of a hint of light static right at the end of the fade out!
There is one click in the dead wax between tracks and then the intro on 'Fearless' plays perfectly. Gilmour's opening vocal is on a par with that and it continues in the same precise way. During the quieter mid instrumental there is one mega quiet tick but that is the only background across the entire track. It is quiet, you might miss it! The end instrumental is 'as new' and the iconic You'll Never Walk Alone... vocal could not play any better. For once there is no static distortion, no ticks, clicks or pops and this track has to grade as Mint- it is that good.
'San Tropez' plays with sublime clarity, depth and warmth from start to finish with no zero interference. This is audio of the highest calibre and Mint is 100% deserved.
'Seamus' ends the side with a clarity we kind of expect now! This is quite rare in a way because it often plays with some static or worse but that is not the case here. As always I have cleaned the record which obviously the 'clarity of sound' but it still needs to have been well preserved to play this well. The playback is so clean and precise and there is literally nothing that detracts from the audio. A Mint track in every way.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The sonar intro on 'Echoes' is STUNNING! The first few grooves often play with some static and especially on vinyls that are over 50 years old and this quiet! It is without doubt the cleanest beginning on this classic that I have ever heard, I just can't put into words just how unbelievable the audio is! There is no background static and only a couple of non-intrusive mega quiet ticks. Listen carefully and you can hear each subtle tone in the music, there are things here I have never noticed before. This intro lasts for over one minute and then Gilmour's first introduction is so close to perfect with just one very minor tick. Again the clarity of sound is remarkable. The opening vocal section plays beautifully without any background and the warmth, depth and resonance of the audio is incredible. Now unfortunately around 5.20 there are four clicks due to the tiny scratch as mentioned but at least it's during a louder section and then the rest of this instrumental plays perfectly. The bass / instrumental section that follows has no interference and again the audio is so deep and strong - this section lasts for over 5 minutes and the playback is superb. Around 11 minutes the 'whale' section begins and it starts with super clean audio and carries on in the same way. This piece is so quiet and yet I only noticed a handful of very light ticks that are totally non-intrusive and one other dull tick that is a little more obvious but certainly not loud. This still has to to be one of the finest 'whale' sections I have ever heard. As the music then builds and then increases in volume the playback is phenomenal culminating in Gilmour's 'jangly' guitar sequence which for once has no static distortion which is a genuine rarity. The third and final verse is 'as new' and the next powerful instrumental is equal to that. The closing section has a clarity of sound that cannot be faulted and the 'soaring' finale has no intrusion either. It is of course a shame about the clicks but at least this interference is very brief but as for the rest of this classic, well it is just STUNNING! The majority is Near Mint to Mint- and I believe G is fair for that brief four second section.
In summary this first pressing plays with sublime quality for nearly all of it! There are so many highlights - the quiet intro on 'One Of These Days' plus all the other tracks on S1 and then the sonar intro on 'Echoes' is spectacular to say the least. If not for those four clicks it would easily rank with the best but if any bidder can live with that momentary interference then I am sure they will be very impressed with the other 99%!!
The Gatefold & Inner Sleeve
The fully textured G & L cover is in great condition and one of the cleanest you are likely to find. The edges have next to no rubbing and the spine for once is still 100% legible with only one small section of wear / rubbing and very little wear on the corners. The right hand corners are super clean with hardly any wear and the opening edge has the bare minimum of handling wear. The front cover is in lovely condition with only a couple of minor faint creases next to the spine and a tiny indent near the top edge and the back cover is stunning with only one very faint crease bottom left. The inside of the gatefold is so clean which is a genuine rarity as it is so 'white' and it has no marking at all. It has only a couple of minor creases on the inner spine that is all. A fine example and Ex+ is deserved in my opinion.
The original poly-lined EMI Harvest inner has no side split or tears and only a little age related fading around the edges. There is very little creasing. Play tested on my Rega P2 Turntable / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers
