Christian Vander founded progressive titans Magma in 1969, starting from a rockist attitude but quickly evolving into a jazzy fusion which has taken on many forms in its tenure. Kohntarkosz was their fifth studio album, released in 1974 and featuring Klaus Blasquiz, Stella Vander, Gerard Bikialo, Michel Graillier, Brian Godding and Jannick Top. It's a grandiose vision of music steeped in high-drama and moving through thematic passages as though they were crafting an opera. Amidst the longer title pieces, there's also a heartfelt tribute to John Coltrane on Coltrane Sundia, which points to one of the many influences that poured into this titanic collective of skilled musicians.
