For pricing and grading purposes, I use as reference the Goldmine Standard Catalog of American Records by Tim Neely. 2nd edition 2000; Krause Publications. Near Mint, NM: A nearly perfect record. The LP shows no obvious signs of wear. An LP jacket should have no creases, folds seam splits or any other noticeable similar defect including cut-out holes. Very Good Plus, VG+: LP vinyl will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by previous owner. The vinyl surface may show some slight signs of wear including slight scuffs and light scratches that don't affect one's listening experience. LP inner sleeves and jacket may have slight "record ring", lightly turned up corners, a cut-out hole or indentation of corners. A synonym used by some collectors and dealers for VG+ is 'Excellent." Very Good, VG: Many of the defects in a VG+ record will be more pronounced in a VG record. Surface noise will be evident in playing especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade between tracks. Vinyl groove wear will start to be noticeable, as will light scratches that will affect the sound. Labels may be marred by writing or stickers; same with album covers and lyric sheets. However the record should not have all these defects at the same time; only two or three. Good, G / Good Plus, G+: Good or Good Plus records will play through without skipping but it will have surface noise and scratches consistently throughout playback. The LP jacket will have seam splits on the edges and spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object.
