Uriah Heep : Very 'Eavy Very 'Umble 1Y1 / 2Y1 1st Press Vertigo 1970
This genuine first pressing plays with superb audio with barely any intrusion as detailed below. There is just a some very light static during the quiet section on 'Gypsy' and one very brief hiss on the 'Dreammare' intro, blink and you miss it! Aside from that the audio is breath-taking! The clarity and depth is up there with the best and an example of that is 'Come Away Melinda' which plays with stunning precision. The power of the audio cannot be underestimated either and there is zero distortion on the top end. All in all this is one superb album!
The laminated cover is in excellent order with only minimal wear and as per some of the first / early pressings 'Walking In Your Shadow' and 'Real Turned On' are the wrong way round on the inside of the gatefold. The original Vertigo inner is in great condition with only minor wear.
As this is a first press it has the large swirl and no songwriting / publishing credits on the S2 label.

The Vertigo swirl inner is Ex+
The labels are Near Mint-
Visual descriptionThe vinyl is in excellent condition and still holds a strong glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. I can see a few faint hairlines when I look under a bright light but there is nothing that stands out as obvious. The run out grooves are very clean and the iconic Vertigo labels are unmarked with only some spindle wear but not that much. The vinyl does have a minor 'lift' on one edge but I wouldn't call it a warp as such. It does not affect the stylus or the playing of the record.
Play grading
The staccato intro on 'Gypsy' plays with typical power and depth and has no background. The opening vocal section from Byron is just as strong and it continues in the same way. There is no distortion and no background static either. Hensley's rip-roaring mid solo accompanied by Box is stunning! The playback is so dynamic and powerful and again there is no interference. The quiet section that follows plays with great clarity with only a handful of quiet statics, nothing intrusive. The remainder plays without a fault so I will grade the majority as Mint and the quieter section as Ex+ which still plays very clearly by the way.
The percussive intro on 'Walking In Your Shadow' plays perfectly and... that applies to the entire track. From start to finish there is no interference and the clarity and power is superb. A powerful track of course but there are a couple of quieter 'moments' but even they play with genuine precision. A Mint version including the fade out.
What follows is perhaps the most 'complete' version of the classic 'Come Away Melinda' I have ever heard. An emotional track the quiet intro plays beautifully with only a couple of barely audible dust ticks and Byron's first gentle vocal plays to the same high end standard. It continues to play with a clarity and warmth that is second to none, it truly is a remarkable version. The more powerful vocal towards the end is 'as new' and the end section is equal to that. I will say Mint- but is the minus really necessary?!
'Lucy's Blues' ends the side with zero interference. Every section plays with exceptional clarity, there are no negatives. The sonic quality is so strong and there is no inner groove distortion getting in the way. Mint in every regard.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The quiet intro on 'Dreammare' is very clean apart from a hiss that lasts for only half a second if that, the remainder plays to perfection. As the vocal comes in the audio is superb and thereafter plays with great power and no interference. The power and depth really is so impressive and there is no distortion on the top end. The first part of the intro is Ex- and is Mint from that point on.
'Real Turned On' plays with real power and definition through every vocal and instrumental section. No need to elaborate this is Mint all the way through.
'I'll Keep On Trying' is another track that impresses on so many levels. The long intro is 'as new' and the opening vocal section is just as strong. From then on it plays with sublime power and depth when it needs to and with a delicate precision in the quieter mid section that has no background whatsoever. A Mint version.
'Wake Up (Set Your Sights)' is of course a track of two halves and they both play with fantastic audio! The powerful opening half could not play with any greater precision and then the more gentle second half plays with wonderful clarity throughout. There are only a couple of mega light ticks on Box's opening guitar part and as Napier's percussion comes in the playback is faultless. So clean and Byron's final vocal is crystal clear also. Honestly the clarity of sound is breath-taking and on a genuine first press also. The percussive fade out does not have even a single dust tick! A classic track and very much deserving of a Mint- grade at the very least.
In summary this first pressing plays to such a high standard with no real intrusion. A minimal amount of static during the quiet section of the first track and one momentary hiss sound at the start of S2. There are no clicks or pops or underlying static and the clarity is stunning on both sides. The power and definition also deserves a shout out as the sonic quality could not be any more impressive. A superb album on so many levels.
The Gatefold & Swirl Inner
The laminated cover is in excellent condition with only minimal shelf wear. The edges have barely any rubbing and the wide spine remains strong and legible with only 3/4 minor rubs and very little corner wear. The 'top' corners have only minimal wear and the opening edge is clean with not very much handling wear. The front cover is unmarked and has some light creasing top left and some minor wear on a couple of small sections by the right edge, a minor thing really. The back cover is very clean with only one small laminate crease near the bottom edge and it's on this edge that you can also see some rubbing but not an excessive amount. The inside of the gatefold is in superb condition and for once has only a minor amount of the white 'marking' near the top of each panel that is often caused by the two of them sticking together. Both panels are very clean here. A strong example overall.
The original Vertigo swirl inner (dated 0470) is in great condition with no side splits or tears and only a little age related fading which is mainly on the top edges. Only minimal creasing and no writing and hardly any other marking.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping. This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage. The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered. Any over-payment will always be refunded.
The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD). An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known. All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection. They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection. I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.
The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each. There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up! Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
