The Grateful Dead's seminal album From the Mars Hotel is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a picture disc edition. Originally released on June 27, 1974, this album follows Wake of the Flood, marking a pivotal period for the band. During this time, they played some of their largest venues with their 75-ton Wall of Sound amplification system, introducing songs like 'Scarlet Begonias,' 'Ship of Fools,' and 'U.S. Blues.' Remastered by engineer David Glaser with Plangent Processes tape restoration, this includes demos of 'China Doll' and 'Wave That Flag' (the precursor to 'U.S. Blues') and a previously unreleased live performance from the University of Nevada-Reno on 5/12/74. Recorded at San Francisco's Coast Recorders studio, the album features Keith Godchaux's keyboard brilliance. Robert Hunter's lyrics, filled with imagery and sardonic wit, shine on tracks like 'U.S. Blues.' Jerry Garcia's lead guitar and guest contributions, including Ned Lagin's synth effects and John McFee's pedal steel, adding depth. Peaking at No. 16 on the Billboard 200 chart, From the Mars Hotel remains a landmark in the Grateful Dead's discography, meriting this celebratory release.
