And yet another new LP from RRRecords, also in an actual printed jacket instead of one of Ron's crazy hand-assembled collages. It's the latest from The Rita, the formidible harsh noise project from Canadian distortion-junkie Sam McKinlay, and regular readers know that I love anything that this guy puts out. Snorkel / Skate features two lengthy new tracks, each one created with a different unique strategy that regardless creates the same end result: absolute skull-shredding midrange wall noise, with a substantial amount of texture and substance beyond your usual bout of mic destruction.
"Skate" delivers a constantly evolving blast of distorted noise and caustic concrete sounds that was created by attaching contact mics to a handrail, which McKinlay then used to grind while skateboarding (footage of this can be seen over on Youtube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3kik3Pn1f8 ). The recorded material was then scultpted into this horrendous blast by both McKinlay and Christian Nicolay, who handled the live sound manipulation, and the recording at times sounds like two thousand free-jazz drummers all playing at the same time, and at others sounds like a single free-jazz drummer being hurled down forty flights of stairs. Towards the latter half of the track, it boils down into a black pit of boiling distortion that's a little more spread out and spacious than The Rita's usual holocaust.
On the other side, we get an epic slab of grueling harsh noise that's more like The Rita's past stuff: an oppressive wall of scorching, smoldering, blackened distortion and molten noise constructed from short samples taken from a bunch of unnamed adventure movies and horror flicks that featured scuba diving in the scene, melted down and slathered with effects into pure caustic crunch and spread out across the entire side of the record. © CRUCIAL BLAST
