New 4AD signing Blood Diamonds (aka LA dude Michael Diamond, geddit?) jumps in at the deep end with this hyperactive collaboration with girl-of-the-moment Grimes. Influenced by Korean pop music and video games, the tune is about as bombastic as Taylor Deupree is restrained, but that’s no bad thing. Initially coming across like a strange, other-worldly version of Jamie xx’s Caribbean-flecked ‘Far Nearer’ it quickly dissolves into a world of neon lights and childish coos, and is all the better for it. The real winner here is a diseased maximalist trance remix from candy rave obsessive Unicorn Kid – if you thought the original track was bombastic, this one adds the same amount of 1996 PVD pianos, snare rushes and filter sweeps you’d find on a Trance Nation comp… and it’s surprisingly sick.
