Also available as a limited-edition 180 gram vinyl import from Germany's Modus Operandi, Call Of The Eastern Moon's vaguely Bakshi-esque stoner-fantasy artwork (courtesy of Tom Denney) looks even more bad-ass in this larger format.
That Serpent Throne Lp wasn't the only new slab of instrumental doom that we got in this week...Modus Operandi also released Call Of The Eastern Moon, the debut album from German instrumental mud-pilots Mills Of God, who take the gooey saurian sludge of Sleep and Electric Wizard and stretch it out into complex, winding, extremely long tracks of psychedelic heaviness. Call... features two twenty-minute songs, each one taking up an entire side of the vinyl, loaded with lethargic Sabbathoid doom, sudden turns into almost funereal bleakness, huge buzzing drone-riffs and waves of tarpit amplifier ambience, lengthy stretches of mathy guitar interplay, wah-soaked Middle Eastern-tinged solos, the occasional souped-up boogie, but mostly these guys keep it SLOW and HEAVY, like the newer, spacier Electric Wizard stuff elongated into massive improv-heavy space-doom jams. Fans of Ufomammut, Sleep and Yob who are down for some longform riff exploration will love this band's brand of monumental feedback-soaked psychedelic acid-doom. It's nothing fancy or groundbreaking, but the riffs are weighty, the songs hypnotic and doused in lysergic haze, and most importantly, I'm never left sitting here wondering when the hell the singer is finally going to kick in. The opiated guitar leads and waves of amp sludge turn these jams into epic sludgescapes, where it's quite easy to become subsumed by the endless maze of Sabbathian riffs. © CRUCIAL BLAST
