Store Categories BLACK CHOW - Wonderland / 12" BRAND NEW VINYL / JAHTARI 2011
Following on from appearances on Hyperdub, Kevin Martin (The Bug) and Kiki Hitomi (Dokkebi Q) take a temporary leave of absence from King Midas Sound (of which they are both members) to deliver their first EP proper as Black Chow, this time for the excellent Jahtari label. Black Chow is an altogether less submerged proposition to King Midas, replacing that signature spiritual narcosis with a more overtly digital-dub-indebted aesthetic. Opening track "Wonderland" carries many of the Jahtari signatures, with the sonic detritus of 8bit machinery strewn all over the arrangement, and Hitomi's Japanese vocals thrown straight down the middle of the mix. But Martin's production is rarely anything less than deadly - imbuing the whole thing with a bass weight that's nothing short of colossal. Pupajim takes the helm for the next track, riding the same riddim with his own vocal version, before an instrumental version seals the first section of the EP in fine style. "Danger" is next, with Hitomi's vocals immersed deeper into the mix, and a more aquatic production from Martin taking the whole thing into more heady territory that just owns it when played loud. 5 track wide - and the most essential drop from Jahtari since that amazing Tapes twelve a couple of years back. Highly recommended.
