You might know terror-disco producer Antoni Maiovvi by his other name Anton Maioff, who is one of the members of the UK noise-rock band Geisha that have a couple of releases out on Crucial Blast. Geisha's still going, but in recent years Maioff has relocated to Berlin from the UK and started up a second career as a creator of awesome synth-heavy dance floor dread that draws heavily from the sounds of John Carpenter, Goblin's Claudio Simonetti, and Italo disco. Under the Antoni Maiovvi name, he delves fully into the world of classic 70's/80's European horror soundtracks and dark spacey disco; we've been hearing this sort of retro-Italo influenced music a lot over the past few years, but Maiovvi does it the way I want to hear it, with an emphasis on dark pulsating melodies and gobs of menace; hell, just the artwork for Thorns of love with the fist bound in barbed wire clutching a heart dripping in blood itself looks like it could have been on a piece of promotional print for an Argento film from the 80s.
The music on Thorns is in that Simonetti / Goblin / Zombi / Gatekeeper vein of throwback disco-dread, full of throbbing electronic rhythms and glimmering looped synthesizer arpeggios, with an undercurrent of menace that lurks beneath all five of these dance floor odysseys. Imagine Giorgio Moroder handling the score for one of Fulci's late 80s splatterfests and you'll have an idea as to what this album sounds like. Heavy synths, pounding bass lines, dark ascendant keys...fans of that vintage analogue synthesizer sound will LOVE this, and Maiovvi's compositions sound even more 80's than Zombi, though the approach is obviously more disco oriented than "prog". The tracks are real epics too, with several of them running from eight to twelve minutes in length, starting with the twilight disco darkness of the first two tracks "This Is The Best" and "The Sigh From The Sky...", the latter especially stunning with it's distorted rock guitar lead and lush spacey production. In the middle of the album, there's a four minute interlude of dark, cavernous solo piano called "Treason", but when it comes out on the other side, the album takes a turn into even darker territory, with the epic danceteria terror of "Class Dagger" and the somber closer "Horsehead Blue"; the latter features the album's only substantial vocal performance, Maovvi's gothic croon melding with the sounds of accordion and chimes. Man, this is absolutely essential for fellow addicts of this kind of slasher-disco and the kind of stuff that the Fright imprint specializes in. © CRUCIAL BLAST
