Artist or Band: THE ROLLING STONES
Album Title: Sticky Fingers.
Producer(s): Jimmy Miller.
TRACK LIST:
Side 1: Brown Sugar; Sway; Wild Horses; Can’t You Hear Me Knocking; You Gotta Move.
Side 2: Bitch; I Got the Blues; Sister Morphine; Dead Flowers; Moonlight Mile.
Label/Format: Rolling Stones Records – original format with the first COC 59100 number. These have a smooth surface with ring ridges and a semi-gloss sheen (Please see my label scans).
Label Conditions: Both in superb condition: very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle marks few, fine and faint. Side one especially, has hardly any at all.
Cat Number: COC 59100 [later pressings had the COC prefix changed to CUN].
Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.
Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.
Weight of this Record: 131 grams. A very fine weight for this record and a little above average.
Country of Manufacture / Rarity: Record and Insert: ENGLAND. Cover: GERMANY. This one includes the prized and highly collectable ‘PAN’ heavy-duty original zipper on the front cover (as seen in close-up). These were briefly manufactured in Germany for the British market. Clearly, this cover was very specialised and the very early ones were made in Germany and included a very different, larger and heavier zipper that was really nothing like the lighter-weight UK-made ones that followed. Standard UK zip covers are relatively common, but that is far less so for ‘PAN’ zipper covers. As a note: the actual cover – the zipper apart – is almost identical apart from the German reference on the spine end.
Other significant factors worthy of mention: firstly, the cover design means it is so prone to damage as the top belt area is cut and open with two delicate flaps that often tear and even shear-off altogether. The zip itself often badly corrodes and seizes up and cannot be moved. This one zips and unzips with relative ease and has minimal tarnishing – all seen in close-up. The back is often badly scratched and scored in manufacture storage by other zip covers resting against or on top of each other, and finding one with only lighter traces is difficult. The PAN zippers were less sharp on the top, so less-prone to this, but I have still seen few of these covers without marks on the back, this is one very rare exception in that respect. But the most important factor for me is the pressing quality of the record itself. Rolling Stones Records were not of Decca quality – their previous label. I have heard a number of examples of this record in either cover that fail to please. Remember, the records were all pressing in the UK. Pressing noises, crackle and muted sound (that more on later ones) as these were mass-produced. Finding a very lightly played example that offers practically the best sound possible is very difficult indeed – and this copy offers very close on that. This record appears very little used and has no pressing issues and plays with very little unwanted at all. Finding a ‘perfect’ playing copy of this challenging record is nigh-on impossible, but this only offers only the odd gentle reminder of it’s a 42-year-old, and popular record. This my personal favourite Stones album, it was a delight to play-grade. I can easily tolerate the odd minor click or minor sound blemish, it is almost the least I ever expect from this album anyway bearing in mind what I have stated previously. Few available ones will better this, and, if indeed I did not already own a very nice one of these already, I would have kept this myself. It includes a superb clean insert sheet and even the original plain inner sleeve is included. A highly collectable ‘variant’, that many consider the absolute original, this a very fine all-round example.
Original Year of Release: 1971
Matrix Nos: COC 59100 A4 / COC-59100 B4
Run-Out Groove Etchings: ‘T.M.L. ROLLING STONES RECORDS’ [on both sides]
Musicians: Mick Jagger – lead vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, percussion; Keith Richards – electric guitar, 6 & 12 string acoustic guitar, backing vocals; Mick Taylor – electric, acoustic, slide guitar; Charlie Watts – drums; Bill Wyman – bass guitar, electric piano. Guest Musicians: Ry Cooder – slide guitar, Jim Dickinson – piano, Rocky Dijon – congas, Nicky Hopkins – piano, Bobby Keys – saxophone, Ronnie Lane – vocals, Jimmy Miller – percussion, Billy Nicholls – vocals, Jack Nitzsche – piano, Billy Preston – organ, Jim Price – trumpet, piano, Ian Stewart – piano, Pete Townshend – vocals.
Brief Info: The first album on the new Rolling Stones Record label and first to feature Mick Taylor as a full-time member replacing Brian Jones. A wonderful album and true classic that included the ever-popular single ‘Brown Sugar’ with varied material, some quite dark. Famed for it’s zipper cover which was based on an idea by Andy Warhol (his name seen inside) and designed by Craig Braun, many regard it as the greatest album cover ever made. Inside it, and beneath the zip lies a pair of white pants and text ‘Andy Warhol - this photograph may not be etc’ (as seen on my close-up picture). This copy includes the insert and the larger, heavy-duty, and much-prized PAN zipper in full working order.
This Cover’s Potential for Wear & Damage: Very High: the buckle part of the front especially is so often seen torn and even with pieces missing. The backs usually heavily indented by other zipper covers pressing against them, often badly marked even from new. Finding an unmarked back is close to impossible, but this one has practically escaped. Logic tells me, these were stacked in manufacture and obviously pressed together in boxes for distribution, thus few escape often severe marks and deep zip impressions.
Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A single unlaminated cover with a third ‘dividing’ sheet of card piece inside making two separate areas. Matt finished with the much rarer ‘contract’ German-made cover that has the PAN larger and more robust, heavy-duty zipper (as seen in close-up). Manufactured in Germany. Includes the insert sheet that was printed by Richard Davis Ltd in England.
Cover Front: This cover has little rear wear, but is quite conservatively graded due to some gentle and light tone spots seen mostly on the pale edge areas of the front. So mildly aged in that respect, but this has far more positives than blemishes as this cover is so often seen damaged. Any other marks are few and faint with just gentle hints of burring on the bottom edge and the odd tiny tip crease. The fragile cut buckle parts above the zipper are crisp, neat and undamaged with just a little light creasing on the top part – there are no tears or repairs at all. The real star of the piece is the famous PAN zipper that is much rarer and harder to find than the more mass-produced UK-style lighter versions. This is in impressive clean condition with any tarnishing minimal and faint. All the teeth parts are immaculate, aligned and barely aged at all. It works with minimal effort and fully unzips to the bottom level as seen on my picture close-up. The cut-out area where it is solidly applied inside, is immaculate with no burring or creasing, or even rubbing. So this prized working metal part is gently aged, that the large-holed pull-part, but fully intact and attractive.
Cover Back: Quite possibly the only one of these I have seen with NO zipper impression, scuffs or score-marks. The changes of this are remote to say the least, but I guess one cover had to be the lucky one and not get pressed against another in a transit box. Very slight rim impression and a faint, mild rim rub. Any toning marks on this side are very few and equally faint. Barely any creasing and any ageing, gentle. The lack of heavy penetrating ring wear and impression lines from other zips are massive and very rare bonuses.
Cover Inner Sheet: From what I can see, this looks near perfect with white pants and midriff artwork looking practically as made with text details mentioned above (as seen on my tricky taken photograph). Zip impression is seen, this is totally unavoidable of course.
Top Edges: Seen end-on, this has three thin edges. Mild thickening or burring with NO tears or splits. The record enters on this to, back entrance. All guaranteed untrimmed with NO repairs or enhancements.
Bottom Edge: This storage edge has thickened very slightly with any rubbing modestly light near the ends.
Right Edge(s), and Type: This edge is closed and it’s edge very neat, straight and barely worn at all. Also this edge has the card end that is stuck down to finish this cover off. This fragile end is crisp and solid and has clearly never come unstuck. All relevent points, as not all are like this.
Spine and Text: Solid, quite thick and straight with any compression light. The ends are gently tapered in manufacture. All the text at the top for band and title is near pristine. The lower text includes the COC catalogue number, this has minimal rub traces. On the very bottom was the German-made reference, this has largely eroded away, it was the only reference to being manufactured in Germany and this area is somewhat vulnerable on the narrower end-area of this cover.
Cover Summary: This is not just a specialist ‘Sticky Fingers’ cover, it was one of the very first made and a significant variant on the far more common UK zip version. A typical robust and heavy German-made product – again, this zip is significantly different, being larger with a different design and shape. Prized and elusive, this is a very fine example, albeit very lightly aged, but FULLY intact and still attractive. It will please many collectors.
The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): the plain white, unlined inner has a little toning and faily mild ageing, but I prefer to keep all original inners and not swap them around unless there is little choice. Fully intact with barely any creasing, two crisp window circles and all edges unsplit with no repairs.
The Insert Sheet: EXCELLENT(++): crisp, barely creased with very sharp edges. This is superb with the black and white side immaculate and any traces of toning to the red logo side mimuscule. This is very impressive indeed.
Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: and this hardly really does this full justice. A very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine, intense black and solidly pressed with a higher weight than most. A few light surface marks and very fine more whispy types seen under bright light, but these are practically all superficial with no sound. The playing surfaces look ‘purer’ and cleaner in manufacture than many I have seen. Often these appear dulled with surface dulling or mottling seen within the pressing, more like the budget labels of the time. With the oil shortage of the early 1970s, recycled or part recycled vinyl was often used which meant less than wonderful sound – all collectors of similar age to myself will remember these well. This copy has NO traces of such ‘impurity’, thus the sound is superior in all respects. I never take any copy of this album for granted however clean it looks until I have played it all. Loud crackle, pressing noises and even horrible loud distortions – and often on the cleanest looking copies you will find, are far from uncommon. These hidden nasties can be all too apparent on this record and most collectors will know this. A very difficult one to find that will play well, this offers the cleanest sound with very little unwanted. The odd gentle click or surface sound trace is near impossible to avoid throughout the duration of a quite long album, and this does have a few quiet songs. Most-all of the very few visible marks are ignored and this has no feelable or penetrating scratches, and I feel sure this one has received few plays. Not for the absolute visual perfectionist, but many, if not most fans will enjoy it, and cleaner pressed examples really are difficult to track down.
Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]
Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark and classic album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. The lack of unwanted noises caused by pressing issues is always what is wanted, and this delivered it in an impressive way. A way cleaner than average pressing and one to be played and enjoyed. This has quite compact groove width for a quite long album by vinyl standard, thus not the loudest of cuts, so it needs to be turned up – as the insert suggests. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, better with higher volume. Any surface sounds are minimal and light, that is unusual too. Many I have heard have had inherent crackle and Rolling Stones Records pressings simply were not up to Decca standard, but this is a very clean pressing, and compared to several I have heard, exceptional. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only very modestly and has been generally well stored, if very slightly aged. Very little of any note, spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this evergreen classic. This rarer PAN zip copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.
Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can all items I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to help any potential bidder and collector. You may notice I only submit records sparingly on Ebay - on average ONEADAY, a couple more at weekends if time permits, hence the name - time rarely allows for more as I Play-Grade virtually every record I offer in their entirety, not just bits to guess a grade - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story. I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested collector – I am very fussy and my buyers have the right to be too. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee total accuracy for colours however but most will be very close. If any picture I take looks more flattering than the actual item for any reason, I will clearly state the fact in the advert and vice-versa. I hope the item below is to your liking - any questions can be emailed and I will do my very best to answer you. I am enthusiastic, and have a fair degree of knowledge about many genres and I promise quality items - bid with confidence - excellence comes as standard and so does Near Mint regularly. Please assume all records I offer have NO jumps, sticks, warps or writing on covers or labels unless clearly stated to the contrary. Thanks for your interest and Good luck – MIKE.
Equipment Used for Play-Grading: I now play-grade ALL the records I offer (unless clearly stated to the contrary) on the following equipment:
Deck: Linn LP12/Hercules/Cirkus with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Rondo Red moving coil cartridge (tracks at 2 grams). Amps: Naim Nait 5i with Project USB phono stage and Chord interconnects. Speakers: B&W 704 Floorstanding 3-way Monitors (bi-wired with Terrarium Black terminated cable). All records I offer on Ebay are cleaned on a professional VPI-17 vacuum machine before play-grading for the cleanest and best possible sound and will include a brand new lined inner and protective cover too. Pictures taken with a Nikon D5000 SLR Digital Camera.
PACKING - THIS IS WHAT YOU GET.
What You Get: To confirm to the strict Ebay rules on shipping, I must now send ALL my packets ‘Signed-For’ with NO exceptions. Both buyers and sellers want their packets to have a safer journey and this is not a bad thing.
I now offer the fastest possible posting, often the very next day after payment is received or within two to three days maximum (unless on holiday). I only use FIRST-CLASS Mail. The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. Printed address labels are used for clarity as well as a sender label. Customers requests or special needs for P&P will be respected if at all possible but ‘Signed-For’ posting is NOT an option anymore. I do not profit on posting and the cost of this lavish packing is NOT even charged for, I offer probably the best-value and safest shipping possible for ultimate confidence. The boxes and ultra thick double-wall stiffeners and bubble wrap make a near impregnable fortress for safe shipping and this is used inland and overseas for ALL my records, not just the rare and expensive. I will invoice any winning bidder as soon as possible after the auction ends. My ‘loss’ or ‘damage rate’ is less than one in two thousand+ based on over 10,000+ items sold in over 12 years of Ebay trading and I consider that pretty exceptional. The only damage rate acceptable for this seller is ZERO and I think my packets will offer just that. It would take a vicious postman or postal service to damage these for sure. Even one of these stiffeners cannot be bent by hand, so what chance 2 inside a box? Oneadayrecords is a MAILER-FREE ZONE. I discount of course for multiple purchases with a maximum of FIVE records per box (one double can sometimes be included subject to total weight). All postage costs are below and at the top of the listing.
NOTE: First Time Bidders: Please ask me first.
PLEASE NOTE: I now exercise my right to open a dispute after the Ebay rule of FOUR days if no payment is received. I will then cancel the dispute to end the, again after the mandatory FOUR days and then offer the item to the runner-up or relist. The non-payer will also be blocked from my Ebay site and they take the Ebay consequences (a strike or removal from the system). Small businesses need prompt payment to trade and these strict rules WILL be applied.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE
My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
