Baron Elmo proudly presents a beautiful, unplayed copy of the superb major-label debut LP from alt-rock chanteuse REGINA SPEKTOR: Soviet Kitsch, released in 2005 by Sire. (Regina's self-issued version had come out two years earlier.) This vinyl edition comes with the killer bonus of two extra tracks that weren't on the CD – “Scarecrow & Fungus” and “December.” When this album hit, comparisons to Tori Amos, Fiona Apple and Nelly Furtado were carelessly flung around, but Ms. Spektor is very much her own woman, and Soviet Kitsch is a delightful surprise that only gains strength with each listen. (Robert Christgau's description of this album as “wise-ass New York art-pop” – a compliment, by the way – nicely captures its oddball flavor.) Helps that she has an excellent sense of humor and is unafraid to be silly when it's called for. Furthermore, her piano chops are impeccable (classical training, y'know), she has a great sense of wordplay that makes the lyrics really stand out, and the arrangements reveal a good sense of when to add instruments and when to keep the sound stark and simple. Nearly a decade after its first appearance, Soviet Kitsch still holds up as a classic of its era. And we have it here in its extremely rare vinyl edition with the two bonus tracks and a cool insert/lyric sheet. This LP has never been played (Baron Elmo purchased an extra copy for his archives), and the cover is in beautiful shape but for tiny dents on the lower corners.
