DESCRIPTION FROM CRUCIAL BLAST:
Like a lot of other people who bought Mr. Bungle's self-titled debut in 1991, I picked it up because of their connection to Faith No More. At that time, Faith No More were one of my favorite bands on the planet with The Real Thing still getting almost daily spins from me. I'm pretty sure that it was a review in Metal Maniacs where I found out about Mr. Bungle; the review made their debut sound strange and intriguing, but I think I was still expecting something that would be somewhat similiar to the more metallic, straightforward alt-metal of Faith No More. I remember being totally baffled when I finally came home and threw the cassette into my stereo; David Louapre and Dan Sweetman's album artwork depicting psychotic clowns on a debauched terror spree was disturbing enough, but I was no way prepared for the hallucinatory mix of circus music, thrash metal, prog, funk, and avant-garde music that this album delivered. I just didn't have a frame of reference for what these guys were doing, and at the time I had never heard of producer John Zorn, and sure as hell didnt know who Naked City were. In fact, I don't think I liked the album at all at first, being turned off by it's unconventional song structures and over-the-top absurdity, but I couldn't forget about it either, and kept returning to it over the next few weeks. After a while, it turned into one of my favorite albums at the time, and was one of the most "out" bands that I was listening to alongside my steady diet of thrash metal and indie rock. Looking back, it's still very weird that Mr Bungle managed to get picked up and released by a major label like Warner Bros.; these ten songs race through a Naked City-inspired feverdream of schizophrenic genre hopping and bizarre sounds that switch from thrash metal to deformed dirge to R&B to porno funk to klezmer to Cage-ian sound art in the blink of an eye, accompanied by Mike Patton's insane vocal acrobatics that bounce from soulful crooning to gutteral death metal roar to Yamataka-esque gibberish and his filthy, frequently hilarious lyrics. I think the band's next album Disco Volante would be their best, which took their sound even further out and dropped some of the more scatological aspects of the debut, but Mr. Bungle is still a confusing, exciting introduction to their ADD-genius and one of the stranger rock albums of the early 90's.
This is the second Mr. Bungle vinyl reissue from Plain Recordings, following their release of Disco Volante last year; like that title, Mr. Bungle has been released on black 180 gram vinyl in a full color jacket with a printed inner sleeve that includes all of the lyrics and credits.   © CRUCIAL BLAST
