Baron Elmo proudly presents a choice vinyl oddity from the Nurse with Wound family tree: the limited edition first pressing of the debut album from avant-LSD warriors EARTHMONKEY: Audiosapien, a double-LP plus extremely limited bonus album, issued in 2004 by the Beta-Lactam Ring label, now out of print in this format. Earthmonkey is, for all intent and purposes, multi-instrumentalist Peat Bog and his father-in-law, Nurse With Wound frontman Steve Stapleton. Audiosapien might just be the only album that can truly be called "psychedelic" in the 21st century. Here you will find the flipped-out visions of Amon Düül II, the pulsing hypnotic grooves of Can, the energy and mischief of the Monks, the glimmering cosmic weirdness of Steve Hillage, the trippier jazz fantasies of Charles Lloyd and Tony Scott, the sheer muscle of the Bonniwell Music Machine and the kaleidoscopic adventurism of Taj Mahal Travellers all rolled into one vanguard rock album. Saxophones, organs, Tibetan chants, Jew's harps, weird guitars, organic percussion, undulating sine waves, and plenty of echo and reverb are woven into gradually unfurling rock tunes that melt in your mind, not in your hands. Individual tracks matter not a whit because this is one long journey that washes over the listener like a hot spring, never ceasing its shape-shifting, undulating groove. The saxophone solos on this set could be on any great soul-jazz record from the 1960s -- but the fact that they are instead enfolded, spindled, and layered through these lovely pulses and shimmering riffs takes them to another plane of existence altogether. It's hard to imagine anyone with an ear for the acid-laden vibe not being totally enthralled with Audiosapien. Turn off your mind, relax, and switch on the stereo: it's time to float downstream. As mentioned above, this version of the double album comes with the head-expanding bonus of an extra album in its own jacket (only included with the first 300 copies) entitled Earthmonkey / Nurse with Wound, that just might be the best part of the whole package. Steven Stapleton's hand can be more readily detected here, making this set all the more desirable for NWW fans. This entire set -- all three records and the two jackets -- is in flawless, mint condition. Baron Elmo bought two copies of this beauty and is now letting the unplayed one go.
