Baron Elmo proudly presents a behemoth of cold brutality on 12 inches of vinyl from art-carnage combo SWANS: their Cop LP, a UK import released in 1984 on K.422 Records. Recorded by the classic Gira/Mosimann/Westberg/Crosby lineup, this album captures the Swans at their hard, pummeling best. Guitars crash like thunder, gouging away at a beat so slow it could best be described as glacial, with lead vocalist Michael Gira roaring and howling from within the black morass of sound. It's like crushing a ten-pound bag of ice cubes with your face and loving it. Gira’s words are suitably rife with disgust, sickness and degradation. (Favorite line: “When you eat your pain you keep your nerve.”) A quarter century after its release, Cop has lost none of its iron-hard intensity... or its ability to coldcock the hell out of the first-time listener, especially when played at the required MAXIMUM volume. The inner sleeve has the complete lyrics and a short piece of graphically violent prose from the pen of M. Gira. Swans devotees, gird yourselves: have you got the stones to take a serious beatdown from Cop? The LP shows definite yet moderate wear but plays beautifully, while the cover is in excellent shape. Still, since the appearance of the vinyl is somewhat less than stellar, we are pricing this album for half what we'd ask for a near mint copy.
