One of 2015’s most hotly-anticipated debuts, London quartet Wolf Alice are preparing to sign off months of hype with their full-length bow.
Drawing comparisons to everyone from Hole to The xx, The Observer has described their music as "an engaging strain of off-kilter indie rock," while Clash enthusiastically deemed them "the lovechild of folk and grunge."
The band themselves, however, take exception to the latter label, with singer Ellie Rowsell claiming “it's 100 percent not a grunge record- it's a much braver record than that.”
"There's a mix of genres on it. We're using our instruments in different ways, like Joff [Oddie] using his guitar as a synth.
"We've been making sounds that don't necessarily sound like guitar and experimenting with the way we use our voices.
“We've tried to match the emotion of the songs in how they're performed and recorded, tried to make a sad song really feel and sound sad."
Genres, though, are futile. What’s important is that these newcomers have delivered a storming studio set, and with the festival season almost upon us, it may well become ubiquitous.
