Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a few generally light, quite fine and gentle spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. These mostly seen with angled viewing under light. A lovely example of this elusive album and one of the earliest you will ever see as confirmed by the matrixes details a little further down.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. Even Pye records became lighter into the 1970s, this issued in the year of the oil crisis and shortage, but still a very solid record that few matched.

Brief Info: The final Kinks album on Pye before a move to RCA. This was a soundtrack album from the British comedy film ‘Percy’ – I won’t go into detail… . It features new songs all written by Ray Davies, some instrumental. It predictably sold poorly and is scarce, but is a lovely album that few Kinks fans will not enjoy. This a lovely clean very first issue copy, these initially included a fully laminated G&L cover – later repressings dropped the laminate. These do not come along often and for those still to hear it, few will be disappointed, it has all the quirky Kinks pop charm and I love it.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single fully laminated format. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: More often seen as a second issue without laminate, this genuine first has lovely shiny, fresh and clear laminate on both sides. No lifting and only gentle rim dulling seen under light which few can hope to avoid with still a thick heavy record inside. A couple of gentle and light half moon surface creases on the front with any marks very few and light. Most of any creasing is on the edges, mostly the spine again as most will have. This cover has four distinct laminate end lines, a little grubbiness has appeared as the laminate shrinks over time, this mostly on the back top edge, lesser on the rest with any fading of the exposed strips minimal and very light indeed. With such bright vivid coloured artwork, these covers often appear very grubby indeed that age them badly, this has very little hint of that overall and much cleaner fresh example will prove hard to find.

Top Edge: Very straight, smooth and unworn.

Bottom Edge: Pretty much as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Generally clean, mostly very sharp with little wear, any thickening minuscule, even as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid but very thin, straight with any compression very light, the ends are deeply pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn, all missing the three fine laminate cracks, the laminate fully intact with no peeling and most still nicely smooth.

Corners: A small rub on the bottom right leading corner, little else. Very fine to excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this rarer fully laminated first early 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This impressive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain white unlined inner with little to fault bar light natural ageing with mild discolouration. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and arguably better with any surface marks mostly light and faint, no penetrating stylus scratches, hence no major sound blemishes and lovely clean sound is assured. A very fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with most of any visual blemishes only seen under bright angled light. Visually an impressive record that should please many collectors, but not quite for the purists who only want perfection at any cost.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This final Pye Kinks record plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Do not treat this as a typical ‘soundtrack’, this is a brilliant Kinks album in it’s own right. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed with only a couple of very gentle ticks noted almost between tracks towards the end of side two – overall, hugely impressive for a 44-year-old record. Few copies will outperform this ultimate first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very modestly and has been generallyt well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. Even though a soundtrack and with some instrumentals, this is still classic Kinks and fans will enjoy this for sure. Arguably a less-lauded album by this famous British band, it will prove difficult to find significantly better, and never earlier, this merits high recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
