Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. A heavy record which was typical on the orange format, later Dawn label versions mostly became considerably thinner.

Rarity: Fairy scarce, and this copy includes the original ‘Mungo Jerry’ 3D glasses which can be considered quite rare. Most examples of this that surface rarely includes them. And there is no faking these as they have the band name and Dawn logo included on their very distinctive shape as seen on my close-up picture. Also finding little played examples that offer top sound is equally difficult, this one plays near perfectly.

Brief Info: Fronted by the charismatic Ray Dorset, Mungo Jerry played good-time blues, folkesque and jug band pop, this was their debut album. Best remembered for their No 1 single ‘In the Summertime’ also from 1970, but not included on this album. They went on to score several other hits and they became well-known and enjoyed for their brand of catchy short songs. This is a lovely example of this first issue debut that actually sold reasonably well. One I have not heard in years and I really enjoyed it, this Dawn record plays superbly well with no pressing issues and lovely clean sound. Also the fragile cover is in impressive condition with any wear or blemishes light and few, this often wears badly with such a heavy record inside. Lastly those crucial 3D glasses, these are practically mint and totally uncreased or damaged, the first pair I have seen as such. The inside of the gatefold cover is blurred and 3D ready, so the glasses are essential to view it properly. So a complete and quite elusive set and a great fun album to listen to.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: actually looks better. A fragile, quite soft and thin card gatefold format with matt fine textured surfaces. The inside is blurred and 3D ready for use with the glasses insert piece, but the main front cover looks quite spectacular using them as well. The affect also seen on the band name on the back cover. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with Patent Pending text. The glass are included along with the original heavy-duty polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front: The least real wear I have seen on one of these. Any grubbiness is gentle and light, a little dulling is seen under light, but the lack of rubbing and creasing makes for an impressive front that also has no sticker issues. View this with the 3D glass, this looks quite spectacular.

Cover Back: Generally similar again, a slight rim rub trace near the top with a gentle hint of grubbiness mostly near the very right edge.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little wear at all, a lightly secondary crease to the right of the main inner fold hinge, that because of the very wide spine which in most cases causes this natural trait.

Top Edges: Mild hints of rubbing and a little darkened on the white surfaces. Still neat, straight and flush.

Bottom Edges: This pair have little to fault.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: This cover has a very wide spine that remains erect and uncrushed, or even tilted. Solid, straight with barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn, given it’s white, it remains generally clean with any grubbiness gentle and light. Minor rubbing near the ends, little else, both folds unscuffed neat and crisp.

Corners: Mild tip rubbing, slight discolour here-and-there to all white corners. All retain very fine shape with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this fragile early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many, and possibly most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): but with the band (or album) name written on one side as seen. At least is pretty much proves it is the original inner sleeve, and this is the exact type Dawn (part of the Pye Group) used at this time. A robust polylined white inner with two immaculate window circles and the lining still clear and even quite fresh. A little of the usual seam adhesive area darkening, but minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The 3D Glasses: PRACTICALLY MINT: as made. These are elusive and rarely seen looking like this. They are an integral part of this album as the cover’s main surfaces are all 3D, and when viewed through these now quite familiar coloured glasses, the effect appears very different. This insert piece is clean and unusually devoid of creasing, even to the part that held in the hand. That area has the Dawn logo and as seen, Mungo Jerry is printed on the front as well. I doubt if a better example of this often missing piece of this album will be found.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, mostly very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. No penetrating stylus scratches on this one, visually an impressive record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Superbly pressed, sadly not always the case for all Dawn records as many collectors will already know. Few copies will outperform this first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
