Label/Format: Reprise – original tri-colour format with matt, smooth surfaces. NOTE: this copy has ‘Side 2’ labels on BOTH sides as can be seen in my pictures. Clearly a significant manufacturing error and one for specialists who collect unusual and possibly unique pieces. Of course, the record plays sides one and two correctly, this is purely the wrong label being placed on side one of the record.

Label Conditions: Little short of immaculate: very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few, very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This is an exceptional record that defies it’s great age.

Brief Info: Best known in the UK for his work with Nancy Sinatra with whom he recorded several hit songs. Famed as a songwriter and his unique and deep baritone voice, this vintage 1968 gem is regarded by many as one of his greatest. Like most of his early original titles they are not easy to find in the UK. A prized album and will rarely be found better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with a laminated front. The wraps around the closed edges on to three large rear flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and has the ‘Patents Pending’ cover. This copy includes a vintage tracing paper lined plain white inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains an impressive shine, freshness and clarity with barely any traces of dulling and with no lifting. Any creasing as fine edge types that few ever escape totally, these mainly small and light on the spine edge. A little gentle toning on the exposed strip of the laminate end on the right, that being the only hint of ageing on a splendid front. The famous moustached singer-songwriter’s portrait on this cover will rarely be seen better.

Cover Back: The white unprotected back has very slightly darkened with age with just a mild mark near the top right corner and a tiny ‘dot’ mark further down. If this is largely all I can state for this predominately white back, it should speak for itself. Rub and crease-free – a tiny few on the laminated flipbacks only, these being solid, strong and undamaged or lifted. All ends very crisp and burr-free with no grime-lines. That always makes such a difference to these old covers, like the front, this back will not be seen much better.

Top Edge: Largely straight, quite thin and unworn.

Bottom Edge: Immaculate.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge a little darkened and thickened, it being a little proud of the back, hence more vulnerable. The back is sharper and hardly worn. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, a little compression towards the top, the ends are tapered in manufacture. The text is all practically perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled clear laminate.

Corners: All four crisp and neat, any tip rubbing being tiny and light. At least excellent or better shape retained with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: An impressive and age-defying all-round example of this elusive late 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a more unusual plain white tracing paper lined inner which has hardly age at all. Just one corner crease stops a higher grading. Often owners (or even retailers) did this to stop the record sliding out. Two immaculate window circles and the fragile tracing paper lining fresh and fully intact, just a hint of natural crinkle being critical. All edges unsplit with no repairs, any discolouration bordering on minuscule.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and this being as close to my full Mint(–) grade without actually quite doing so. A superb visual copy that is ultra clean with great shine and heavily pressed. Barely a noteworthy user mark or blemish to be seen and this record appears hardly even run-in in vinyl terms. I simply cannot imagine finding this record better a great deal than this. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive original UK record plays up to its high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Any surface sound minimal to none and few copies will even match this let outperform this ultra early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – for those not familiar with this man’s work, a great place to start. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and merits my strongest recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
