Released in 1970, Loaded was The Velvet Underground’s fourth and final classic album, with many fans deeming it the full stop on their career, and preferring to wipe 1973’s disastrous Squeeze from history.
With his last clutch of songs for the band, Lou Reed took a notably brighter turn, fully embracing pop structures and sunshine hooks he’d been unable to air under the Velvets’ name.
As with its self-titled predecessor, the record proved his genius beyond any reasonable doubt, and that his talent alone could drive the band shorn of John Cale’s experimental visions.
Indeed, Loaded’s melodic heart could be seen to precurse to his glam-flavoured solo work, and with iconic tracks such as Rock and Roll and Sweet Jane its an album which ranks among its era’s essentials.
