By now, anyone that frequents the Crucial Blast shop knowns all about Torche. The Florida band has gotten HUGE over the past two years, becoming one of the biggest bands on Hydra Head and receiving massive love for their last album Meanderthal and having a video receive play on fucking Headbangers Ball off all places, all for playing a ridiculously catchy but undeniably CRUSHING brand of sludgy rock that still has these guys ranked as one of my favorite bands, period. Hard to believe that a band that rose from the ashes of Floor (one of the slowest, heaviest bands of all time) and Cavity would turn into an indie metal sensation like these guys have, but then have you heard the songs? Pure pop songwriting brilliance, crooning harmonized vocals and hooks so gooey and sugary and instantly catchy that they put bands like Foo Fighters to shame, but wrapped up in unbelieveably heavy metallic riffs and a rhythm section that turns all of the air in the room to concrete and that planet-wrecking force known as the BOMB STRING. Yeah, these guys rule, and to remind you of how much their new stuff rules, Torche released this collectors 12" earlier this year for the vinyl junkies who can't get enough of their music. And this release most likely is just for the vinyl junkies, as while it includes two exclusive new songs and a dvd of Torche music videos, the a-side of the record is made up of two of the jams off of Meanderthal, so there's some double dipping going down here.
Though the two new songs on here are fucking AWESOME, as catchy and poppy and crushing as anything off of their last record, hell, maybe catchier, "Sugar Glider" alone embodies that Foo Fighters-meets-Melvins popcrunch reference that I talked about in my Meanderthal review as much as anything the band has done.
The a-side track are "Healer" and "Across The Sheilds", two of Meanderthal's heaviest and catchiest songs, either one could have easily been a single if such things existed anymore for bands like this. On the flipside are "Mash It Up" and "Sugar Glider", each song a total sludgepop anthem with monster hooks and soaring vocal harmonies, pretty much all fast-paced like the majority of their newer stuff, if anything, the songs are just getting more compact and perfect. Again, these two unreleased jams are some of the best Torche songs I've heard yet!
Along with those two new songs, TOrche fans also get a DVD to sink their teeth into. Nothing too fancy or extensive, the dvd comes in a full color wallet and includes professionally shot videos for the songs "Healer" and "Across The Shields", "Healer" being more of a traditional live performance piece, while the video for "Across The Shields" is pretty damn amazing...you might have already caught this on Headbangers Ball when it debuted a few weeks ago, a weird series of images of the band dressed up in furry costumes and looking like characters from some nightmarish children's storybook, kinda like Where The Wild Things Are on really bad acid, and the whole video has them trapsing and dancing through the woods...pretty creepy, really. Stills from the video appear on the Lp jacket and the DVD sleeve, so it all ties in together, and the packaging is fantastic as usual per Hydra Head standards, thick colored vinyl presented in a thick full color jacket, a huge black and gold Torche sticker emblazoned across the plastic sleeve... © CRUCIAL BLAST
